The line is getting blurrier all the time, though. What if an independent act crosses the threshold and becomes top-tier mainstream?
Good question! Then it would become mainstream music. and I also think the music would changes a lot with it too (It could be negative or positive, I know) because the artist would lost a big part of his control of the music. For example, if Linkin Park is independent I'm 100% sure we won't get songs like Burn It Down, What I've Done or even Heavy, namely more promo songs than artistic songs IMO. Edit: I know it sounds stupid when you say X is better than Y, but this is an unpopular opinion so...
If you guys think pop punk was bad, almost everybody in school that I know had a pop punk phase. Even the popular kids in college had embarrassing stages with bangs, emo captions on their profile pictures and dark getups. It's hilarious when my friends would necropost our other friends' old posts and pictures for fun.
It's not so much the style but the actual content of the verses. All the self-referential and excessive "I'm so great" lyrical content just doesn't go in an Enter Shikari song imo. I honestly think a majority of indie acts make extraordinarily forgettable stuff in their attempt to be independent. It takes a really good indie band to stand out.
I'd say this applies to any band, be they independent, or signed to a major label. A band like The War on Drugs makes far more memorable music than a band like Imagine Dragons ever could, and I'm sure there are examples that go the other way. There are largely forgettable acts on both sides.
You can say that to Mainstream too (as Gibs said), and in any case it's subjective what's forgettable and what's not. I just I tend to like Indie music more, but it's more a personal thing, I guess.
I think that's quite an unfair judgment. I could easily say that there are a lot of forgettable rock bands out there in attempt to sound like other famous rock bands. That doesn't mean there is something bad with the rock genre. In any sort of category or genre, you're gonna find a lot of forgettable shit. It takes a little digging or fame for a band to find the really good ones or ones that resonate with you.
Okay, what if you hear an artist's music with no context and you don't know who they're signed to or how big a following they have?
I love Grime and let me tell you Big Narstie is absolute garbage. I can't put into words how bad he is lol. Strangely enough though he is hilarious as a human being. He somehow manages to appear in videos every time I scroll through my Facebook feed and he never fails to make me laugh In terms of rapping though I have no idea how he's ended up in the Enter Shikari song
That maybe wouldn't change much, I guess. If I liked it will still like it but normally someone who isn't living under a rock will know the mainstream artists. And I think there's still some differences between the typical indie and mainstream sound (the indie girl meme prove it too )
I've just checked out some of Narstie's solo tracks and his lyrics are indeed bad and cringeworthy. But I still somehow like his contribution to Shikari's Supercharge. Hmmm, Weird
I like post Black Album Metallica. Load and Reload are underrated and I really like the last two records Death Magnetic & Hardwired. St. Anger isn't that bad either, but the drum sound is kinda annoying.
