See, that whole thing creeped me out. See what these horror games are missing are the fear from the main character. If the ambience was right (heck even that green color would work) and it was in first person, with the screams and feeling of paranoia..it'd make a great PS2 game.
I agree. I think the horror genre (whether it be movies or game) is oversaturated. Yeah, Resident Evil 4 might be a good game, but does it scare you so much you want to shit your pants? Probably not. Land Of The Dead might have a ton of gore, but does it make you stay up all night after you come out of the move? No. That's what the genre needs. Creativity can go a long way. I wish movie studios and game developers would stop trying to cash in on the last big horror hit, and try something new and creative.
I actually have an idea for a new game in the survival horror genre that'd be new and different but I probably would never get it made. There IS a game where the character shows fear and shakes and stuff, with great graphics too, but the AI is stupid so the game is ruined.
Indeed, horror is beginning to lose it's greatness. But at the same time, I even have my own ideas, but I think what people who make horror related material seem to be doing is holding back. They probably do this because they don't want any lawsuits filed against them for "traumatizing" a player. Since you can sue anyone for anything nowadays... Though the controversy might create great coverage, I think it's something the companies are trying to avoid thus they make material that is "keeping it safe." Not only that, they probably don't want to take any heat for creating something that can "back fire" on them in any way.
None of you guys have played Silent Hill? I can't believe how underrated that game is, so much scarier than the Resident Evil series. Doom 3 had a really good scare factor I thought, ambient lighting and sound, it's just that the physics and AI were lame. This game looks great, I'd be pretty pissed if I saw myself on that video.
The last two (not counting The Room) didn't really terrify me that much. Although the award for scariest will always go to the first one on PS1. Primitive graphics or not that was one fucked up game. Is "The Room" scary at all?
I haven't played "The Room" either to be honest, and the games didn't exactly terrify me, I just considered them a lot scarier than Resident Evil games.
Thats just plain.... Creepy.... What a good scary game needs is something like Half-life 2 and doom3 mixed great looking, actul puzzles that are hard, ducktape, phyics and sound and there could be a good horror game.. If there was a actuly good story line that any creative desiners could think up of.
A good scary game doesn't NEED to be great looking. Take, for instance, the original Silent Hill. Fucking scary. And you can whine and whine for what you want, but that doesn't do anything.
