So this past week I watched

Jack the Giant Slayer (5/10) - Not bad, but not great either. I expected a lot, especially since Bryan Singer directed and Chris McQuarrie wrote the film. Look at the actors: Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Nicolas Hoult and Ian McShane. And yet, I felt underwhelmed. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't wowed by the story, nor the action scenes. Bryan Singer can do so much better than this.
Oz the Great & Powerful (6/10) - Also felt mixed with this. James Franco does not really fit Oz's role, most of the jokes aren't funny, and the film focuses on too much special effects. Still, the special effects are impressive (albeit overabundant) and Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams give good performances. It had a lot of potential, especially since Sam Raimi directed the movie, but I didn't feel entirely impressed by it.

    Celeste & Jesse Forever - 8/10

I'd never heard of this either until Snail brought it up. Great movie. Great leads. Rashida always looks fine.

    Compliance - 5/10

Interesting premise but is waaaay too preachy and goes over the top in the last act.

The plot was way too improbable.

Life of Pi. 4.8/10 It's okay but I don't see why so many people are raving about it, it's full of fallacy. The visuals are interesting but still notably CGI. It's neither the worst or best movie I've seen though.

Celeste and Jesse Forever. 9/10. There were some things about this movie that annoyed me (Like Celeste's android/iphone stereotyping profile rant) but overall I loved it.

What do you mean it's full of fallacy? And which CGI bits you found iffy?

    -

Children of Men (2006) - 5/5 - Fucking brilliant and deserving of more praise!

If the movie was made to make someone more open to religious thought, it failed. The guy just chose to believe in some power because it gave him comfort as he said it is was what he preferred. Also the faiths in which he adheres, I do not think are compatible. So, if the premise were to tell a story which makes you believe in a God, it does not. In fact I would argue it does the exact opposite. Also his second story is much more logical, and thus if I were to believe it were true then his first one was probably just fantastical fiction branded as truth, in which case makes me distrust the man. Like I said though, it wasn't the worst movie I've seen and maybe I misinterpreted the purpose but I'm just saying that if the premise were to make you question whether there is a higher power, it didn't do too well.

IMO, the movie wasn't made to help someone find God. In fact, Pi says you can decide which story you want to believe, looking straight at you (at the camera). You can understand what God is: something to help humans escape from the cruelty of life, making them believe there is something more than what we see, that we live for a higher purpose. This also means that not everyone needs God. Pi needed to believe, after losing everything

^ Agree with whatever Sunset said. It gives you an interpretation of who God is and what He represents. Whether you chose it accept or go with it is completely upto you... it mirrors the open ended nature of the story itself.
