Weird Words

This gives me problems as a native English speaker. Hell, I'm a native English speaker and I fully agree that the English language is fucking odd.

Like, why is rabbit spelled with two b's but habit only one b? Almost the same word except the first letter is changed, yet one has one b and the other has two. I can't tell you how long I had Breaking the Habit in my phone spelled with two b's before I finally figured out my mistake

 

Why does 'habit' have one b and 'hobbit' have two?

 

Why is horizontal pronounced differently than the horizon?

 

Why is it spelled 'why' and not just 'y'?

 

Career?

I always read it in my head as "col on el" and often accidentally pronounce it like that too
