I think this new album is fixing all of LP's minor problems! For example the lyrics appear to be getting more powerful in The Catalyst (without the angst). I was fine with the angst but I don't want it in this album, or at least not much of those type of songs.
How do you know how ATS will be lyrically? The Catalyst has just got a lot of repeating lyrics in it. That doesn't mean they are bad. I try to see it as the last Chapter of the album because that's going to be true when the album is as LP said a journey. But until its out we wont know what LP has to offer this time. Btw The Catalyst is energetic but the lyrics are not really good by themselves.
Very good examples. Although in this case its about the raplyrics it shows how lyrics can make a big difference alone for there "sound".
I think everybody who dont think LP has stepped up lyrically with the new album should just go to the Catalyst thread about the meaning. Really if you cant see thats a huge step up from I wanna heal.. I wanna feal.. Then you are just plain dumb. And also on the new album they dont "Change" the lyrics untill the magic is gone. I know(in my head lol) that this will be there best album yet
You could be right, its my guess too its gonna be their best album yet at least lyrically. Concerning The Catalyst: Well I said I try to see it as chapter of the album in which it makes sense. Its just before the atomic war as far as I see it. I didnt say they were bad, I just didnt want to complete my opinien about it before ATS is out.
When I want to jump around and yell because I'm f*ing angry and incoherent or just depressed, I listen to the songs Chester is relevant on, he projects their emotion and soul to me. When I want something that will really get to me and make me think, I listen to songs Mike is relevant on, he projects their mind and conscious to me. If I just wanna hear some freaking LP, what do I do?, I don't listen to rap, I don't listen to screamo, I listen to LP. This is so hard to debate on when LP has always been in a class of their own conjoining 2+ genres at the hip, heart and soul doesn't mean the same damn thing to everyone and I accept that, because debating over what comes from the creative mind and soul is pointless. It defeats the point. I myself find more satisfaction and meaning in Chester screaming his lungs out now then I did when I was younger, I used to find Mikes part much more interesting. May be it's because I'm a hormonal teen now but, hey, the dude could scream obscenities and I'd still think it was meaningful and powerful. Doesn't mean Mike doesn't put just as much soul into it, just in different ways and that's what makes LP unique in my eyes. His part may be more complex and in depth at times but like I said, heart and soul mean something different to everyone, not by a lot, but a little person to person. ...did I stray from the point? o.o I don't remember but that's how I feel.
Random 2 cents. Mike is dope. I can't really complain about him anymore. Chester isn't a master of singing. He isn't trained and it shows during concerts. Their weak spot USED TO BE... Don Gilmore. If it weren't for him we wouldn't have had lyrics written for little kids. AND the "definition of a Linkin Park song". They boxed themselves in with their thinking. BUT...if they weren't so self-conscious, there would be no Fort Minor. I met my girlfriend through Fort Minor hahaha
I sort of agree with the Chester thing. I don't believe he does many things to maintain his voice. And he bombed "Into You" during DBS shows. But his voice is still awesome.
I love his voice. I wish he was more of a consistent singer. I just looked up "Into you" live, and the 1st one I clicked was horrid. The 2nd one was pretty good.
Claiming LP would be in a class of there own is a little ignorant for there are many artists who cant be put into just one genre and cant be said to be 'worse' than LP. And speaking of genres they are just a way to categorize music, drawing artificial lines between different styles. There is no inherent value in combining many genres. I think you listen to music in a different way than I do. I listend to LP a lot in my teens but not anymore it just doesnt give me enough today. Just mirroring my emotions becomes dull for me very fast. When I am in a certain mood I also like to listen to certain music or songs that carry a similar mood but thats just a 'necessary condition' to enter the song and dive into its story or message or world. But with LP there is not so much more than the superficial mood of the songs. Some of their songs have something more to offer, definitely, but not too many, especially the Chester-heavy songs lack this quality. For example Kenji of Fort Minor. Mikes tells the story of his grandparents in a Japanese-adversarial environment in World War 2 in the US. He does it so well the song becomes a window to the world of his grandparents at that time. The song is pretty sad, you might need to be in a sad mood to really get involved with it but you can transfer the principle to other songs of different moods, even anger. But if a song cant provide something behind the window it is empty like many popsongs. There are different shades of empty-or deepness of course but LP seldom offers the latter to a significant degree.
I want to hear LP come up with a song that is like a mixture of Not Alone, Fort Minor's The Hard Way, and have it build into a guitar-driven ending like Little Things Give You Away... I'm not as into the Given Up/The Catalyst Chester anymore, the scream/sing voice... not digging it anymore.... I want to hear more of the soft-spoken Chester... mixing that voice with some hip hop elements and some good guitar work on mid-tempo and low-tempo songs would be fantastic
I havn't read all the replies on this thread but here's what I think: - Mike is the one putting most of the input into Linkin Park, especially on ATS - Chester mentioned in an interview that all credit should go to Mike. Chester should be used just for his voice - the other guys in the band should write lyrics and music for him. His solo record wasn't very original and was a bit too simple (imo) so that just proves the point. - The only way Linkin Park can be groundbreaking is by not being radio-friendly but still keep popularity. For such a huge commercial band that have produced many hit singles, that would be a massive challenge. - Will ATS be groundbreaking in terms of music? Not likely. - Will ATS be groundbreaking in terms of Linkin Park? Most likely.
I think I agree with this. I'm not sure whether Chester is much of an all-round musician and writer, whereas Mike is pretty capable in that respect. That said, it probably isn't necessarily a case of Mike having written all of the good things they've ever done and none of the things that weren't good. And this. Maybe not loads and loads but I think they should retain a decent amount of the more melodic singing from him that was on the last album.
Exactly. Yeah, you're right, I am not watching how I word this, they are just a huge example and head of their older genres, the perfectionists of it. Also, the combining genres was a little misleading too I guess, I mean, there are people that are more drawn into certain elements LP offer and then there are people are drawn into the others. They have plenty. I myself as I said am drawn in by Chester's significance on the band but I greatly appreciate and would never fail to acknowledge Mike's, they all put their heart and soul into their work but certain people find different power behind how they convey it, whether it be brilliant raps or wicked screams. I like them both, it's what makes LP brilliant, but I am more partial to the screams and powerful singing. It's what makes my hair stand on end personally.
