I keep hearing how bad Bullet For My Valentine's song is on the album, and how good Trivium's song is. I'll probably think the exact opposite when I get it.
Trivium's cover was more or less exactly like the original, at least that was the impression half-listening to it for the first time. So it's kind of boring. At least Welcome Home distanced itself from the original. But yeah, it's not too good.
I don't like covers that stay true to the original. Covers are supposed to be the bands covering a song by an artist that influenced them, and making it their own.
Mastodon's Orion was/is great. They give it kind of an almost jazzy feel, and a groove that I think lacked from the original. Like, it's very danceable. But still pretty heavy.
Chimaira's cover of Disposable Heros is the best thing on here, why? Because it actually sounds like Chimaira.
Yeah, I like it, but it's almost like they took the original song and added the Chimaira near-death screaming over it. But I like it as well. Right now though, Mastodon's Orion is my favorite. But I really liked the original, and I really like Mastodon, so it makes sense.
Favourites:Trivium and Mastodon Worst:Mendeed (the vocals don't suit it all IMO) I was suprisingly impressed with Fightstar's cover lol.
Apparently Mastodon's cover of "Orion" wasn't mastered and that's why it sounds so raw compared to the other recordings. The song was put on the disc by mistake and the real version is on their web site.
I borrowed the cd and ripped it instead of buying it myself. It's pretty good. I didn't notice much difference between the sound quality of Orion and Mastodon's albums. That was my favourite from the album, anyway.
