Well, generally when someone asks, "What?" a repetition of the previously mentioned is required. Unless it's my Da, who just asks that out of habit, even though he hears everything perfectly clearly the first time around.

Jen, I have no idea! Well, I do. I was fiddling with a couple of lighters at the same time, trying to simultaneously light several candles, and then I dropped one, and while still holding two in my left hand, I bent over to pick it up...

If somebody other than your father says "What" it doesn't necessarily mean they didn't hear.

 

I ask "What?" out of habbit as well.

 

Hmm. But then again, what I said could be understood as "PLEASE SET MY HAIR ON FIRE,".... which wouldn't be entirely unusual for me. I think someone did once set my hair on fire, because I asked them to.

ARGH. I mean, I found the first and second derivatives of √x. 1/√x shouldn't be that much more different.

 

It still makes no sense. It's just lines to me. You could be typing in cyrilic again for all I can tell.
