Does anyone happen to know exactly what Joe is doing in live shows? Scratches are obvious, of course, and we all know his parts in ITE, New Divide, Crawling, etc., but what about his less obvious parts on other songs? And in which songs does he play both samples and scratches? I know he does it on Numb, but are there any others?
He scratches and plays samples in Papercut. Probably others too, just off the top of my head I know that one for a fact. Oh, as for less obvious...he sings backup vocals on When They Come for Me, Waiting for the End, Wretches and Kings, Iridescent, The Catalyst, and Lost in the Echo.
He triggers and manipulates things throughout many other songs, like "Faint", "Papercut", "Waiting For The End", "Blackout", "The Catalyst", "Bleed It Out", "New Divide" and so on - all of these aside from the lead parts he performs
Ah. Do you know which part he's playing exactly on WFTE? I know he does scratches/vocal glitches on Blackout and scratches + the synth solo on The Catalyst (how is that one even done live?), but I don't know his part on WFTE. Also, what's his live part on WTCFM? I think it might be scratches, but I'm not even 100% sure if there even are scratches on the studio version. Also, does anyone know what he actually does in Faint?
I really just know that he works the vox samples during the climax of "Waiting For The End". During "Faint", he triggers these one-shot synth samples throughout the choruses, and I think he plays the string parts off vinyl too
Does anyone know what Joe does during Lies Greed Misery and Iridescent (besides totally inaudible backups on the latter)? Iridescent isn't exactly a very electronics- or scratching-heavy song, and Brad and Phoenix play a lot of the drum and synth samples, respectively, on LGM. Does he just sit there, like he does on Given Up and No More Sorrow?
Indeed. Does anyone know what Joe is doing on Final Masquerade? Mike seems to be the one playing most of the keyboards on that song. Is he doing the weird whooshing sounds that pop up throughout? Or is he playing samples?
Joe just stares at the audience for the entire concert while pressing random buttons to be apart of the action
He probably does ambient noises, mixing, vocal effects, some synths, most of LP's songs have a lot of sound going on so Joe is always doing something.
...Is Joe that useless now? Oh wow. How the mighty have fallen. time to make a track called "i miss the old joe hahn Eh, I wouldn't bet on it. A lot of that is backing tracks IIRC. But hey, he seems to mess around with his MIDI fighters a lot, so maybe he is actually triggering some of the backing synths and samples. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Even tho the latest response is very old here, basically everything that happens musically on stage that isn't "played" by Rob, Brad, Mike or Phoenix or Chester Joe does.
For "Heavy", he triggers all the miscellaneous hits and vocal stabs, and I think some melodic key parts too
