It actually worked both ways. On one hand, they've reached a broader audience with mega-hits like "New Divide", "Waiting for the End" and "Burn It Down" (although it didn't really help that they returned to hard rock, which is largely unpopular nowadays). On the other hand, people now completely hate/dismiss the band for their nu metal early days and only remember them (ex. "Linkin Park still exists?") for that era. They almost have as much hate as Creed.
Oh haha Actually, those numbers are pretty impressive for a band that long. It's just Songs About Jane has a large following.
Haha yeah I'm talking about Maroon 5. But in terms of LP, there always will be annoying people who whine about how they don't sound like Hybrid Theroy LP. And sadly, that's a good deal of the fan base. Missin out if you ask me.

Not always. Music sales decrease every year, especially rock music and especially post 2009. You can see it from the Year End sales, only 3 or 4 rock album at the top 40. Very sad. Wasting Light (Foo Fighters), A Thousand Suns (Linkin Park), The 2nd Law (Muse), Delta Machine (Depeche), El Camino (Black Keys), and other are very good album, but their sales stay around 2/3 million, not more.
ARCTIC MONKEYS ALBUM IN STUDIO (2006) WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT: 2,600,000 (2007) FAVOURITE WORST NIGHTMARE: 1,700,000 (2009) HUMBUG: 900,000 (2011) SUCK IT AND SEE: 700,000 LIVE (2008) ARCTIC MONKEYS AT THE APOLLO: 200,000 TOTAL: 6,100,000
Their last album in studio (AM) is over 2 million copies worldwide and nearly 500k in US so far. Great sales for a rock album of 2013, probably their most successful album. Maybe 2,5/3 million in a long time.
Foo Fighters' Wasting Light sold more than 870,000 copies in the States. http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/sales_ur.cgi
