'The Interview' Cancellation: Violation Of Free Speech?

North Korea is accusing the U.S. government of being behind the making of the movie "The Interview."

And, in a dispatch on state media, the totalitarian regime warns the United States that U.S. "citadels" will be attacked, dwarfing the hacking attack on Sony that led to the cancellation of the film's release.

This stand is taken by the DPRK because the movie "The Interview" is an undesirable and reactionary one justifying and inciting terrorism which should not be allowed in any country and any region.

No wonder, even political and social circles of the U.S. commented that it is quite wrong to defame the head of the state for the mere reason that his politics is different from that of the U.S. and it is in the hostile relationship with the latter and, therefore, the Sony Pictures Entertainment got into a serious trouble and paid a due price.

For these reasons, the DPRK is more highly praising the "guardians of peace" for their righteous deed which prevented in advance the evil cycle of retaliation-- terrorism sparks terrorism.

Moreover, the DPRK has never attempted nor made a "cyber-attack" on south Korea. The rumor about "cyber-attack" by the DPRK was a concoction made by the south Korean puppet regime and its plot.

After all, the grounds cited by the FBI in its announcement were all based on obscure sci-tech data and false story and, accordingly, the announcement itself is another fabrication. This is the DPRK's stand on the U.S. gangster-like behavior against it.

The DPRK has already launched the toughest counteraction. Nothing is more serious miscalculation than guessing that just a single movie production company is the target of this counteraction. Our target is all the citadels of the U.S. imperialists who earned the bitterest grudge of all Koreans.

Our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the White House, the Pentagon and the whole U.S. mainland, the cesspool of terrorism, by far surpassing the "symmetric counteraction" declared by Obama.

The army and people of the DPRK are fully ready to stand in confrontation with the U.S. in all war spaces including cyber warfare space to blow up those citadels.

North Korea is having major Internet problems, just days after President Barack Obama promised a proportional response to the devastating hacks against Sony.

The country, which the FBI accused last week of the cyberattack, is suffering from periodic Internet outages, and experts at DYN Research found that recent problems were out of the ordinary, according to a report from North Korea Tech.

"I haven't seen such a steady beat of routing instability and outages in KP before," Doug Madory, director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research, told North Korea Tech. "Usually there are isolated blips, not continuous connectivity problems. I wouldn't be surprised if they are absorbing some sort of attack presently."

In an interview with Re/code, Madory said that even typically strong connections are experiencing disruptions. (CNBC's parent NBC Universal is an investor in Re/code's parent Revere Digital.)

"They're pretty stable networks normally," he told Re/code. "In the last 24 hours or so, the networks in North Korea are under some kind of duress, but I can't tell you exactly what's causing it."
He added that there is no way to know if the outages are the result of an attack, or are just from maintenance or a power outage. Still, "given the timing," a cyberattack is worth considering, he told Re/code.

Internet connections into the isolated nation of North Korea are showing what researchers call “signs of distress,” which could indicate they are under some kind of cyber attack.

Analysts at DYN Research, a New Hampshire-based firm that tracks the health of the Internet’s underlying infrastructure, says the firm has monitored some disruptions to the flow of Internet traffic into the country since early Sunday.

Doug Madory, the firm’s lead analyst, told Re/code that connections that are typically solid have experienced ongoing and persistent disruptions, the source of which remains unknown.

“They’re pretty stable networks normally,” Madory said. “In the last 24 hours or so, the networks in North Korea are under some kind of duress, but I can’t tell you exactly what’s causing it.” Possible reasons include an attack by another nation or third-party hackers, he said, but also things like power outages and network maintenance. “There’s no way to confirm that these outages are the result of an attack, but given the timing, it’s something we have to consider,” he said.

The disruption comes on the heels of the accusations by the FBI implicating North Korea for a devastating hacking attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment. The attack first came to light on Nov. 24, and may have been motivated by a Sony-made motion picture comedy, “The Interview,” which concerns a CIA-backed assassination attempt on the life of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

On Friday President Obama said that the U.S. would respond to the attack against Sony “at a time and place of our choosing,” but declined to elaborate.

Madory said that under normal circumstances, the North Korean networks, like those of any other country, steadily announce their availability to the wider Internet. Since Sunday those announcements have been disrupted, consistent with the Internet routers responsible for coordinating the country’s traffic going offline. “It sometimes goes down for a little while and then comes back,” Madory said. “This has been recurring and constant and is definitely outside the norm.”

The disruption recalls an incident in 2013 in which North Korean networks were thought to be under attack in retaliation for the “Dark Seoul” attacks against South Korea. In the Dark Seoul incident, networks of three South Korean TV broadcasters and three of its banks were crippled; South Korea blamed North Korea for that attack. But when North Korea’s networks were under attack, that country officially blamed the U.S.

The thing about North Korea’s Internet is that it barely exists at all. The country has only one Internet provider supplying it with outside links, known as Star JV. It’s a joint venture between North Korea’s Post and Telecommunications Corporation and a Thailand-based firm called Loxley Pacific, DYN Research says. Star gets its connectivity from China Unicom and Intelsat.

Whether it’s an attack or not, given North Korea’s isolation, it’s hard to know how disruptive an Internet outage might be to its society. Last year the magazine Foreign Policy sought to count how many people might have access to it, and estimates ranged from a few dozen, to about 1,000 people on the outside. Most are believed to be members of Kim’s inner circle or foreigners. For others, there’s a strictly controlled domestic intranet that looks nothing like the Internet we’re accustomed to.

Update: Arbor Networks, a security research firm, is also monitoring the network disruption in North Korea. Dan Holden, the firm’s director of security research said he’s been monitoring what he said appears to be attacks against North Korea’s domain name routing servers or DNS servers.

The method is similar to attacks used against Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox network. The attackers, he said, appear to be using the Internet’s time servers to launch anonymous denial of server attacks against North Korea’s DNS machines. DNS servers act like a global telephone directory correlating Internet domain names to numerical IP addresses, making them an essential part of the Internet. Disrupting their operation makes sites that rely on those DNS servers invisible on the Internet.

“The technique is highly effective, it’s anonymous and it’s not hard to do,” Holden said. “Traffic from the time servers is being reflected to North Korea’s DNS servers.

Tim League, Austin-based founder of the Alamo Drafthouse, tells The Dallas Morning News via email that “Sony has authorized shows for Christmas Day. Will have Dallas shows on sale within the hour.”

The Alamo Drafthouse Richardson says tickets will be available on its website before 11:30 a.m.

We’re awaiting word from other exhibitors, as well as from Sony Pictures.

Sources familiar with this morning’s conference call saySony is going to make the movie available to theaters at a reduced rental rate. They also say Sony is looking put it on a streaming service (not yet named) and video on demand by no later than Christmas.

Less than a week after Sony Pictures canceled The Interview amidst hackers’ vague threats, it’s once again beginning to look a lot like a possible Christmas Day opening is in the works.

Sources familiar with the situation tell The Dallas Morning News that Sony executives are discussing the likelihood of a Thursday release during a conference call that was scheduled to begin at 10 this morning Dallas time. Sony has said it wants to release the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy about killing North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un; and exhibitors say they want to show it. There has also been some suggestion that Sony will follow a theatrical release with a video-on-demand offering, possibly days later. At this point, though, no one will go on the record — not Sony, not exhibitors.

But this morning ago, an Atlanta independent theater announced it will open the film on Christmas Day. And there is no doubt that the Alamo Drafthouse will screen the film if it comes available. Yesterday its founder, Tim League, tweeted a link to the Alamo’s website and the Art House Convergence’s petition demanding The Interview‘s release as “an opportunity to reaffirm clearly our dedication to the value of freedom and the absolute necessity to keep our film industry free of restriction, censorship and violent intimidation.” The Alamo’s a member of the indie-art house coalition; so too is the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff.

For now, take all this with a North Korean-sized grain of salt: Just days ago The New York Post reported that Sony was going to use its never-heard-of-it streaming service Crackle to show the film for free. Sony later dismissed that account while insisting The Interview “will be distributed” somehow without saying, well, how. This is all starting to feel like one big practical joke — or the best promotional campaign for a movie in the history of illumination.

President Obama, of course, last week gave a thumbs-down to Sony’s plan to bury The Interview. “You know, had they talked to me directly about this decision, I might have called the movie theater chains and distributors and asked them what that story was,” Obama has said. Apparently, the movie has bipartisan support: Over the weekend Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus sent a letter to the owners of the nation’s biggest theater chain, including Plano-based Cinemark, that said, “I want to speak clearly on behalf of the Republican Party: I urge you to show the movie.”
