So even though the album releases tomorrow over here, for some reason the Sam's Club near my house in Vegas sold the album early and I jumped on it once I found it. After two full listens, I'm thrilled: this album is absolutely amazing. Worth the long wait, and Coldplay's the best.
Coldplay has not been my cup of tea for the last 10 years, but it is starting to turn. After a couple of listenings, it's fair to say that I am positive surprised, even though I'm not completely sold. Below are my ratings, with Midnight being the strongest track on the album: Always In My Head - 7/10 Magic - 7/10 Ink - 6/10 True Love - 5/10 Midnight - 8/10 Another's Arms - 7/10 Oceans - 4/10 A Sky Full Of Stars - 5/10 O - 7/10 All Your Friends - 6/10 Ghost Story - 6/10 O (Reprise) - 6/10
Disappointing they didn't do the entire album. Oceans was beautiful. And closing with Paradise instead of Midnight... C'mon.
Coldplay - Ghost Stories: Always In My Head: A great opener for the album, and strong lyrically. "My body moves, goes where I will, and though I try, my heart stays still." Such a heartbreaking line. I really like this song. Very atmospheric. GREAT production on this track. 4/5 Magic: When this song first released, back in March I think, I really didn't enjoy it, coming off the high that was Midnight. However, in the months following, it's became a real grower for me. One thing I've noticed about this album is the focus on bass, and I LOVE it. 4.5/5 Ink: This song really doesn't do anything for me. While it functions fine, it really lacks the emotional punch tracks like True Love, O, and A Sky Full of Stars possess. Fine lyrically, but the actual execution of the song falls real short. 2.5/5 True Love: True Love is my second favorite off this album. This song is absolutely heartbreaking; the lyrics are very sorrowful, and the guitar solo is absolutely GUT-WRENCHING. This solo is perhaps the best solo Jonny's ever written in Coldplay. I really wish the solo was longer, but I'm confident that it was meant to be that way. A definite 5/5. Midnight: Nothing else need be said about this song. I'm sure everyone here knows how great this track is (unless you're one of the weirdos who doesn't like this track). 5/5 Another's Arms: Another favorite of mine of this album. Great lyrics, good song, very atmospheric. My only problem with the song is that it disappoints when compared to the Live version, but oh well. Still a great track. 4.5/5 Oceans: I absolutely loved this song when it first released on BBC Radio 1, but my liking for this track has actually regressed. While very emotional and intimate, it really goes nowhere, and really lacks the power to make this a truly great track. If this track ended in a very big, emotional way, akin to The Raven That Refused To Sing, this could have truly been a great track. It lacks any emotional pay-off. The transition to A Sky Full of Stars is perfect though 3/5 A Sky Full of Stars: My love for this song is unreal, this song is just incredible, fuck the haters. The part where the synth intensifies, and Chris sings with such passion, is perhaps one of my favorite Coldplay moments ever. 5/5 O: I feel really weird giving four 5/5's for an album, but it's the truth. I mentioned above that True Love was my second favorite track off of Ghost Stories; this one would be my #1. Words can't describe this track. And I thought True Love was heartbreaking, this track is 10x beyond that! This one is definitely up in my top 10 Coldplay songs now. Funny how that upon my first listening of this track, it did absolutely nothing for me. 5/5 BONUS TRACKS: All Your Friends: Enjoyable, but understandable why it didn't make the cut. 3/5 Ghost Story: I would have loved this song to actually make the cut for Ghost Stories. Logically, I think this track would have fit real nicely in between Another's Arms and Oceans. 4/5 O (Reprise): I really like it, but I understand why it was cut. Having the 2nd part of O, plus this right after it, would have been a bit too much. However, I think this could have served as a great intro for O, even though it's labeled as a Reprise! 3.5/5 ALBUM RATING (not counting the bonus tracks): Mean: 4.2 My Rating: 3.8
I would say so. Like I said in the shoutbox, this album contains some of the best songs Coldplay's ever done IMO. Current Album Ranking: 1. Viva La Vida 2. A Rush of Blood to the Head 3. Ghost Stories 4. Mylo Xyloto 5. Parachutes 6. X & Y
I really enjoyed this album. My album rankings would be Viva La Vida = Mylo Xyloto = X & Y > Ghost Stories > Parachutes > A Rush Of Blood To The Head A Rush Of Blood To The Head was really the only Coldplay album I don't really enjoy. Sure the title track, Clocks, and Amsterdam are amazing tracks, but nothing else really appeals to me for that album. And I have those three albums ranked equal because I really can't decide which one I like better. But going back to Ghost Stories, I really enjoyed this album. While part of me wishes that more of the album sounded like Midnight, I'm still pleased with it. That being said, my two favorite tracks on this album have to be Midnight and O. O is such a beautiful song and is definitely among some of my favorite Coldplay tracks. Both of the bonus tracks are also really enjoyable (Reprise is okay, nothing really special at all).
aight so after listening to it, i gotta say, I'm impressed. I didn't have too high hopes for the album since Mylo was meh, but damn this is a solid effort. I particularly think it begins and ends very strongly. "Always In My Head", "Ink" and "O" are amazing. I'm not too fond of "Another's Arms" or "Oceans" so I'd say those are the main weaknesses of the album. Also, the three singles have been growing on me and I'm enjoying them quite a bit. All in all, a great album. I give it 77 Swag Points out of 100.
The liner notes for Ghost Stories are very disappointing. I was hoping for pages upon pages of lyrics, and pictures of every scene on the wings of the cover, but nope, 4 pages of liner notes. Much disappointment.
Really? That's disappointing. I'll eventually buy the physical copy just because I like to "collect" CDs. People think I'm crazy when I say that I'm going to buy a physical copy.
I get the feeling that Coldplay's performance at Royal Albert Hall will be filmed for DVD. You just can't perform at Royal Albert Hall, and not film a DVD.

Watched the special on Youtube. Disappointed that "Midnight", "O" and "Ink" didn't make the cut. I loved those songs.
They did ! The NBC version was a short version. The full version with all the news songs was broadcasted yesterday. Here's a link for the full show. The quality sucks but it helps to give you an idea
The more I listen to Ghost Story (The song) the more I like it. Usually I don't like bonus tracks, but this is easily one of my favorites on the album. Upon the first few listens I was really disappointed in this album, but after listening to it after understanding exactly what the album is about and being in the right mood, I ended up loving it. I now like every track, but even with that said I still have to rate it as among one of my least favorites, but that's only because I love their other albums so much. I'd probably rank it as my 5th favorite, being slighter better than Parachutes for me even though I love that album there's a few songs I don't like on it. ARoBtTH, X&Y, and Viva just can't be beaten for me. X&Y>ARoBtTH>VLVoDaAHF>Mylo Xyloto>Ghost Stories>Parachutes As far as GS songs go. O>Midnight>Ghost Story>Another's Arms>All Your Friends>Magic>Ink>Oceans>Always In My Head>True Love>A Sky Full of Stars (Sorry, I just really don't like EDM, but it's not that bad) I really love how every song sounds just as great live as it does in the studio versions. Most bands don't translate well live, but they're really great live.
