Yes I'm a showoff. But I'm surprised more people haven't done it in this format. === (#1) Album Of The Year Coldplay - X&Y **** 1/2 Coming in at #1 is my pick for album of the year and the surprise hit X&Y. This album was a shock for most Coldplay fans as it was more electronic and faster than their previous efforts. Taking a totally different path from "A Rush of Blood To Head", this gave Coldplay their first #1 record in the states and around the globe. Listening to their debut "Parachutes" against "X&Y" you'd be hard pressed to believe it was the same band. While some fans feared the change, others embraced it as a bold new leap for Coldplay and a sign of what's to come. From the cleverly borrowed notes of 2010: A Space Odyssey in the first track Square One, the mood of this album is instantly evident. It's hard to pin the sound of this album as some would say it is electronic rock, while others would say it's purely alternative. Either way, the diversity of this album, the unexpected nature of every song, and the thought provoking lyrics of Mr. Chris Martin is enough to make me give this 4 1/2 stars out of 5 and label it as my album of the year. (#2) Runner Up Fort Minor - The Rising Tied **** "Who Knew?" is the first word that comes to mind when listening to Mike Shinoda's debut album "Fort Minor - The Rising Tied". Who knew that Mike Shinoda could write lyrics with this level of intensity, and who knew that one man could be this capable musically. When listening to The Rising Tied and listening to the samples that run evident through each song, it is clear that Shinoda is either behind Linkin Park's signature sound, or plays a big part of it. While most did not know what to expect from a Mike Shinoda solo record, fans and listeners alike, may rest assured that this solo album is far from a "flop". Mike Shinoda drifts away from the more common subjects of today's hiphop (degrading women, taking drugs and gun violence) and instead focuses on such touching topics as the death of his grandfather, his family's imprisoment in WW2 Japanese internment camps, and what it's like to be without your loved one while they are off in another country. Such meaningful topics, plus a lineup of stellar guest artists (up and comers Styles of Beyond and Holly Brook, as well as Common, John Legend and Kenna) makes this album a gunner for the album of the year title. However, this album is not without its flaws. While the album has loads of replay value, some of Shinoda's lyrics fall weak while other tracks (i.e. Believe Me) probably would've done better not being on the album at all. Either way, whether you've been a Linkin Park fan for years, or never heard Linkin Park/were never interested in them, this album might be for you. Definetely worth a listen if you are sick of mainstream rap lacking any sort of creativity. Four Stars. Honorable Mentions Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel Staind - Chapter V Thrice - Vheissu

I can't say I bought a hell of a lot of albums in 2005 like I use to, but my favorite record by far was "With Teeth" by Nine Inch Nails.
After hearing Riverside's latest CD a few more times and listening through it carefully, it really hit me as an amazing CD that shot past "Frances the Mute" and almost knocked off Ghost Reveries as the best album of 2005. These guys are amazing, a groundbreaking CD and this is only their second album! FINAL TOP 10 for 2005: 1. Opeth - "Ghost Reveries" 2. Riverside - "Second Life Syndrome" (up 6) 3.
