I'll need to hear Rome's voice first before I decide, but I'm already kinda judging the move to reunite. Not a good one at all. All the diehard old fans are going to be upset, I think. Not because the music might sound different, but Nowell was like a Cobain, his fans LOVED him.
sublime were win before. I've seen vids of the band with rome and he's actually good. Can he write like nowell? That remains to be seen.
Well I would agree but Cantrell wrote most of the music for AIC, Nowell wrote most of the music for Sublime. I'll try to hope for good music but it will be hard.
Music is only half of it. There's the vocals. With rare exceptions, you can replace a guitarist or drummer and no one would no the difference. But you just can't replace vocalists because the replacement won't sound the same. I cringe every time I hear the new singer in AIC do old songs. Not because he's bad, because he's not, he's very talented. But it just isn't the Alice in Chains I know and love. When I hear the new AIC play an old song, I'm expecting to hear Layne's unique raspy, grungy voice and I don't.
I can agree with that but at the same time there are bands that have done better imo with different vocalists. Adema with their second singer. Faith No More with Patton. I haven't heard the new guy in Sublime yet so I don't know there. Found this though. From Rollingstone.com Not really sure how I feel about that fiasco though.
Fair enough if the others want to be in a band together again, but didn't Brad Nowell do a lot of their songwriting? If that is the case, should they really be calling this Sublime?
I agree but at the same time Layne Staley did alot of the songwriting for Alice In Chains but they found a fantastic replacement in William DuVall so I guess it's not much of a problem.
I think for most people it's going to fall to how the new guy is. There will always be the "hardcore" fans that will hate it no matter what but I think provided the music is good they have a shot. Unfortunately for them, they probably only have one shot.
Having heard the new guy, I'm thoroughly impressed. I support the reunion. It isn't Sublime but at the same time Nowell wasn't Sublime either. It was all of them. Look at Guns N' Roses, Axl isn't GNR; but looking at Velvet Revolver neither was just the Slash, Duff, and Sorum. It was all of them that made the sound what it was. So is it Sublime, not really. Is it good, yeah.
The new lineup using the Sublime name was struck down in court a few days ago, so if this lineup with the new singer continues, it'll have to be with a different name, unless they reach a settlement with Nowell's estate. What I want to know is, how did Wilson and Gaugh find the new guy in the first place? He's just a 21 year-old kid who posted some covers of Top 40 singles on Youtube (stuff that doesn't sound anything like Sublime), and now he's randomly Brad Nowell's replacement.
