An easy-to-use work desktop does not necessarily need icons either. The key is to hone in on the key apps you're having to use at work and focus on those. Especially when you're stuck using XP SP3. Hence the quicklaunch bar having Chrome, Excel, my Mainframe app, Outlook, and sticky notes. Once you can identify what is truly needed in a business environment, cleaning up the appearance of your workspace does wonders.
