There's always been a debate about that very subject. Personally, "rock & roll" to me doesn't invoke the same thoughts that it might for other people. It just means "music" to me, plain and simple. Having a different HOF for different genres would be overkill. They need to change the name, no doubt, but the general idea behind this is in the right place. It should encompass all genres. except KISS.
KISS are a load of wank to be honest. They didn't do anything original, they just did what had already been done before them, but did it bigger, louder and more in-your-face (read: annoying) RHCP deserve it IMO though.
How the hell are ABBA classified as Rock and Roll? The only non-stupid nomination there is is the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Kiss.
Jeez, what is up with the KISS hate in this thread? I don't think they're terrible and they've inspired a lot of artists.
KISS stands for everything that I absolutely despise about the music industry. Everything they do, everything they say is carefully planned out and done for the sole reason of the "classic rock motto": sex, drugs and rock & roll. Except, y'know, replace the music and drugs from that saying with a giant dollar sign, because that's all that matters to KISS, Gene Simmons and all of the current record labels that stand to make a billion dollars off of their new tour and album. What ever happened to playing music for the sake of music? It shouldn't take a back seat to making big bucks, atleast in my mind. I might not love Linkin Park like I used to, but goddamnit, atleast they show some passion about their music! If I could somehow ignore all of this, then maybe I'd enjoy KISS' music. But I can't, and I also don't like the simple, straight forward approach to their music. They might as well rename themselves "$". FYI: Before anyone gets any funny ideas and wants to claim I hate KISS because Trent Reznor hates Gene Simmons (he claims Reznor is still a heroin addict), then you can turn around and get out of this thread. I've hated KISS long before my love of all things NIN ever came to be. [/rant]

Trent Reznor is a HUGE KISS fan. NIN was one of many artists that submitted covers for the KISS My Ass tribute album but didn't make the final cut, and there's even a sample of the live version of Shout It Out Loud from Alive II in Starfuckers, Inc. (which Trent even took the time to officially license).
I'mma jump on the KISS hate bandwagon. Fuck em. Gotta love contributing to threads. Also wat. Of course everyone has their influences, but this is 100% incorrect. You aren't allowed to hate a guy and still like the band they play in? Gene Simmons is the biggest dick out there, i'm surprised all KISS fans don't hate him.
He seemed to be implying that the Trent Reznor vs. Gene Simmons crap would somehow validate a Nine Inch Nails fan hating KISS. The fact is, they were one of Trent's biggest influences. And trust me, a lot of KISS fans DO hate Gene Simmons (the person) for one reason or another. Gene Simmons the musician, when he's actually trying, people don't hate him so much. Also, in terms of the whole money thing, any band/artist who has ever signed with a major label was "in it for the money," to a certain extent. Musicians want to make a career out of what they do. Career, as in making money. If that wasn't true, there would be no need for record labels to exist. And up until just a few years ago, signing with a major label was exactly how you made money as a musician, there wasn't much of an alternative. FYI, KISS doesn't even own the rights to their entire back catalog of music from the first 30 years or so of their career - Universal does, as a result of their acquisition of Mercury Records (which itself had previously bought out Casablanca Records). If they were really THAT obsessed with money, don't you think they'd make an effort to buy the rights to their songs, so they'd be making more than just songwriting royalties off of their album sales?
Very much agree, main reason as to why I think they deserve to get in before RHCP. Not saying that RHCP shouldn't get in, just not before some of the older greats have gotten in first.
Yes, I know about the Starfuckers, Inc. thing. Thanks. Being a fan of the band, and being a fan of the way they operate their franchise are two different things. Yeah, he's a fan, but... And just for added emphasis, let's see Gene Simmons' response: What a mature man. I'm sorry, but I'm not giving my money to this douchebag, I don't care how bad I need to hear a geriatric old man sing about his cock.
I feel I should state that Gene Simmons is a member of KISS. He isn't the band itself. I fail to see how what he says matters.
KISS is one of the legendary bands that can classify themselves as Old School Rock N Roll like Metallica, Guns N Roses, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, even though I'm not a big fan of them I still believe they have every right to that nomination. Good on them I say and about freakin' time! And as for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, even though I slightly disagree with that nomination as they are mostly post-funk but yet again their old stuff was pretty good, it's still better to vote them than ABBA. I mean, since when did Dancing Queen or Mama Mia become Rock N Roll?
