How about A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway? I've read it in high school and enjoyed it, so I can safely say that it's not going to be very difficult. It's about love in times of war. More info at Wikipedia (be careful, spoilers!)
I still vote for Memoirs of a Geisha.. A little info, I'll try to not be very spoilerlish but if you want to know what the book is really about .. here is a part of it, not very detailed . "A girl is sold by her father to an okiya to be raised to be a Geisha or a maid, when her mother becomes ill"
I'm interested in both the books you mentioned, but the problem is, if people don't like it/don't understand it, read about 50 pages and quit, then it's useless. So I suggest we start with something simple.
Memoirs of a Geisha is pretty simple, it's about 400-500 pages. It's really easy to follow along with very easy to read. But maybe that's just for me because I was so ingrossed in it. Hmmm.
The Road is a horribly simple book. Let's go for something good, like Dostoevsky's "Crime & Punishment"
