Rap is music it's just some rappers rap about stupid things. (hoes and b*tches, weed, bling bling, etc etc) but that's more mainstream rap you don't really hear about the rappers that rap about things that matter.

You know what I'm talking about, anything that ends in izzle is not a word. Anything that is not in the dictionary is not a word. Yeah, every word we use was made up at some point, but there's a difference between words made up by professional linguists that since the start of English were put to use and words made up by some rapper while he was stoned out of his mind.

Coolio's fine as long as he's rapping about something that makes sense. But the shit Snoop Dogg puts out about shizzling, whatever the hell that is, is worthless crap with no meaning at all.

I do not really care for rap. To me, it all kind of sounds the same. Most of the rap songs I hear have the same beat looped throughout the entire song, and it gets boring and annoying very quickly.

But then, I am only exposed to the mainstream stuff, so I'm sure the underground stuff is much better. But I won't go out of my way to find the underground artists, because I just don't like rap. I have no problem with people that do like rap, as long as they don't act like they're better than me just because that's what they choose to listen to.

I prefer the rock side of Linkin Park, although I enjoy the rap side of it because it is different, and I think Mike is a much better rapper than most of the others I see out there. His lyrics are actually intelligent.

I also have an extreme distaste for rap and for the same reasons as everyone else here. But one thing that pisses me off more than this mainstream rap songs is their freaking music videos. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME!!!! EVERY SONG!!! EVERY ARTIST!!!! EVERYTHING!!!! ITs just the rapper shoving their face in the camera and like a bunch of hoes dancing around and crap!!! AHHHH IT BURNS!!!

I'd just like to give my two cents before I go:

Just because you may not like a certain music, doesn't justify deeming it fake, unreal etc. and this goes for ANY genre.

I listen to rap about as much as I listen to rock, and though I would probably say I have a greater emotional connection to rock, you have to understand ALL mainstream music isn't "true" music. It's a job and people will make "crap" music if that's what pays the bills. This is exactly what happens in Hollywood, which is why so many action films are made every year.

Lastly, though many mainstream rappers do get repetitive, you have to understand their mindset. They have no interest in making an emotion connection with their audience. They have no interest in making thought provoking music. Once you understand that, you can enjoy rap/hip-hop as much as any other genre.

EXCEPTIONS: Eminem, N.E.R.D., Ludacris are among the few that make their music well.

I agree. I hate most rap that talks about that, and just rap that is repetative. Some rap is good that talks about motivation and teen feelings.

Rap is music. It is a way of expressing yourself. Some people just take it to a highly hurting manner, like some rappers just talk about how certain people are stupid and #### like that. I also don't like it much when they talk about their own lives. I don't much care for rap but I have nothing against the kind of music. I have something against most rappers that just have very stupid music, just like any genre has musicians that are just stupid.

A lot of people take rap the negative way because you see mostly the rappers that end up in jail for random reasons and not country singers.

I'd say there is a connection. Rock music can assure you someone else is feeling the way you feel, but I believe hip-hop can change the way you feel. And most importantly make you feel good. Depends on who you are, where and what you come from I suppose.

Technically, rap IS music. But the music behind it, with maybe a few exceptions, is repetitive to the point where there is only one sampled loop going throughout the whole song, with maybe some added samples here and there with some extra layering in the chorus.

But coming from a musician's standpoint, rap isn't how music should be. Music should be emotional, straight from the heart, passionate, and most of all CREATIVE. How the hell is rap creative? Its the most prefabricated music genre out there. The sampled loop takes up the whole song, and the melody (if there is one) isn't developed at all, there is no change in time/key/dynamics. From a musical standpoint rap is lousy and there should be no reason why its so popular. But of course people aren't following their 'hearts' but following the current trends and styles.

If you like rap, okay....its fine with me, you can like whatever you want, but if you want to REALLY enjoy music for the music's sake, then you need to explore. Try different things. Get into stuff like Jazz and Blues. You can tell these guys apart because they play their instruments in different and unique ways.

Being creative for a musician isn't really hard...but if you can make millions and write absolute crap, why do you need to be? ;)

I agree with that. Mainstream rap (mainstream music in general to me) sucks. I just wish I could get the REAL rap to the people who don't like it. I mean I don't care about people who totally HATE rap. I mean they hate it. So what. I just don't like the people who talk to you like this "Hey wanna here this tight song?" "Yeah sure what style is it?" "Rap." "Psh. Forget that! Rap ain't real music. All they do is talk. Anyone could talk." but they don't realize how hard it is to be a truly good rap artist. Yeah 50 Cent and Lil' Jon or whoever suck in my opinion. But I just wish people wouldn't lump them in with the good artists. I think The Darkness is HORRIBLE. Doesn't mean that rock sucks. Just them.

I still listen to stuff like Jurassic 5, The Rascalz, and K-OS.

The Rascalz album 'Global Warning' is a great album! There are a couple of songs with the 'hoes' involved, but there are some really meaningful and inspiring lyrics. One song, 'Fallen', has Red 1 talking about a friend who was killed on the street. Really emotional stuff!

There are in fact talented rappers out there. Not all rap sucks, people like Ludacris and Missy Elliot both direct their own videos and write their own music, even the beats too. Their video's are amazing, I personally love them. I don't buy their CD's but deep down, they have talent unlike 50 cent, Ja Rule, Bow wow, and Ashanti. Bah. I wanna vomit when I hear their name's. But anyway, no matter what we all say rap is in fact music. Just most of it isn't very good music. Most of what I know of sucks, which is mostly mainstream. There are underground rappers that have some serious talent.. it's almost mind blowing. But rap, I do have to admit, is music. No matter what most of us here say, it is a genre. So there for it's music.

My thoughts are that rap is music, it's just not very good music anymore. This mainstream rap we hear now is always (like other people have already said), filled with made-up words and talk about sex, drugs, money etc... and it's a bunch of crap. Nobody cares how much money these people have. Nobody cares what they spend it on. Hip-Hop is good music. I'm a hip-hop fan myself, I must say.

People say, "There's no difference between rap and hip-hop." But they're wrong. Rap has evolved away from hip-hop over the years and these mainstream rappers are giving it a really poor name. I like hip-hop acts that keep it real. That's what they're known mostly for. Anyone ever heard of the Roots? Jurassic 5? Rascalz? Cypress Hill? They know how to keep it real. You don't need to rap about useless crap to make good music.

Rap was never a synonym for hip-hop. Rap is a part of hip-hop. Ever heard of the 4 Elements?

Mainstream rap is destroying America's youth. Go to any public school in the US, and you'll see a good majority of the kids, white and black, talking like goddamn morons because they think it's so cool to talk like their idol 50 Cent or lil john. dey talk like dis n fink its so cool, but its not. If people want to listen to mainstream rap, fine, let them, but when rap makes their IQ drop dramatically, then they need to take a few steps away from the stereo and keep it off for awhile.
