Seems like I'm going to work four days in the Christmas holiday. I'm actually looking forward to it, kinda.

And I'm getting my grades tomorrow. At 9.35. I should've picked a later hour.

Nah, it's Stansted, luckily. Most flights there aren't cancled, just delayed at the moment. There's no news on her flight yet.. (it doesn't arrive until 12:50 tomorrow)

I am a victim of Xenophobia. Xenophobia is the irrational fear of anything foreign or different, including, but not limited to, people and situations. As a child who has dealt with adversity in not only being biracial and Jewish, but also by being a 16 year old senior, I've seen my fair share of discrimination. However, I thought that the students in such a diverse city like Brockton would know better than to discriminate. Brockton prides itself on being a melting pot of different cultures, races, and beliefs. So why are we now trying to suppress the freedom of expression?

Personally, I have been attacked not physically but figuratively because of my individuality. After being harassed on a constant basis for approximately 20 minutes, this individual stated that based solely upon the clothes I wear and the music I listen to, I would become "the next Columbine." Yet, they say we're discriminating against them?

Another example of the discrimination is the fact that for four years, bottles and other trash has been thrown at us simply because it was "amusing" to pelt the "devil worshipers" with waste. To simply believe that one is a "Satan worshiper" because of the way they choose to dress or the music they listen to is a pathetic defense mechanism used by those who are too intimidated by the differences of others.

It is a necessary lesson in life to accept others. Did we not learn this from the Armenian Genocide? Did we not learn this from the Holocaust? Did we not learn this from the Civil Rights Movement? Did we not learn this from Kosovo? Apparently not. All great fights for change come from the few who stood up for their beliefs. The saying goes, "if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything." Dylan and Justin finally stood up for something they thought matters. History has a tendency to repeat itself, and they were simply trying to change the course of history itself, and end the infinite circle of hatred.

Dylan and Justin were sick of seeing their friends bombarded with ignorant remarks, accosted with trash, and physically harmed by those who cannot accept that there are those who deviate from the mainstream norm. Dr. Szachowicz, you always tell us how proud you are of the Brockton High students. Why condemn those who only wish to better the school you so love, and let those who truly spread "hate propaganda" still run rampant?

In the Brockton High 2006-2007 student handbook given to all of the students this September, there is a bulleted list on page seven that lists Student Responsibilities. In this list, there is a statement that students should "demonstrate sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural diversity." Also, the list states that student should "treat peers and staff with respect" and "recognize the rights of others."
While having different taste in clothing or music isn't the same type of culture as being from a specific country and having specific traditions, it is still a subculture of not only America, but in the world altogether, and demands the same respect, sensitivity, and acceptance as any other culture.

On page eight of the same handbook, the Brockton Public School's Non-Discrimination Policy is mentioned: "The Brockton Public School System does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex, veteran's status, sexual orientation or disability in admission to, access to, treatment in or employment in its programs and activities." Yet it's okay to discriminate based on being a standard deviation from the norm of society?

Most importantly, on page eight, it lists the Brockton Public School's policy on Civil Rights and Harassment:

"Under federal and state law, all students have the right to an education that is free from discrimination. All school programs
and activities are open to students without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability or sexual orientation.
All school procedures and policies are applied in such a way that students are treated equally and fairly.

It is the policy of the Brockton Public Schools to promote and maintain an educational environment that is free from
harassment. Harassment is against the law and will not be tolerated in the Brockton Public Schools. Harassment is defined
as repeated unwanted or unwelcome verbalisms or behaviors with overtones related to a person's race, color, sex, religion,
national origin, disability or sexual orientation"

The bolded parts in this statement show where we are denied our rights as students. We range from Caucasians to Haitians, from Jews to Gentiles, and yet we get persecuted just for the way we look, the way we act, the music we listen to? Is it okay to allow those who are homosexual, from different countries, those who are disabled, but not the ones who don't fit into the cookie-cutter clone ideal that mainstream pop culture attempts to make every teenager into?

On page ten of the same handbook, the Victim's Rights policy is listed. "If a student is assaulted by another student, proper punishment will be given to the assailant." Proper punishment? Is it proper punishment that while those who have constantly made a fraction of the school's population a victim gets off without a single blink of an eye, but when someone stands up for their rights, they face expulsion? Is that proper punishment, really? It seems more like Lady Macbeth, in Shakespeare's classic play Macbeth, attempting to rinse her hands of the blood of King Duncan, and yet the blood will not be removed. She didn't have to kill him to have blood on her hands. The mere fact that she allowed it to happen without single consequence makes her not a bystander, but an accomplice in the tragedy herself.

By simply expelling these two gentlemen, you are not keeping the peace at a school that is suffering from an understood apartheid; you are only adding more fuel to the fire that is going to take down everything in its path. By expelling Dylan and Justin, you are only instigating more wrath. By expelling Dylan and Justin, you are telling those who have persecuted the outsiders of normal pop culture that it is perfectly fine and that the victims of their hatred will be removed, and that those who persecute will not get in trouble. You may be trying your best to do what's right, but in the end, the suffering still occurs.

The sad thing is, what happened on April 20th, 1999, in Columbine, Denver happened because Eric Harris and Dylan Kelbold, the two young men who shot up the school, were persecuted for their differences. They were bullied, and the events that happened there are the main reason that we are persecuted today. The mere fact that those two young men listened to a certain type of music and dressed a certain way has left a stigma in everyone's mind and is automatically prejudiced against anyone who dresses that way or listens to that type of music. By ignoring our pleas for equality in treatment and protection, you are only fueling the prejudice against a culture that has spawned some of the greatest musicians and artists of the school itself. We ignore the fact that these kids are good students. That they are great musicians, great athletes, great artists. We ignore that they care for their society and want to strive to make the world a better place. Instead, we are ridiculed and threatened with violence just because we look different, to the point where we are attacked.

We only ask that we are treated with equality, and ask that those who have enough courage and self respect to not take the brutality anymore, and instead raise the metaphorical fist to battle not with physical harm, but with acceptance and peace towards our peers and staff in the Brockton Public Schools, and in the world.

Thank you for your time in reading this letter. I only hope that Brockton High follows through on its promise on protecting the civil rights of every student in its walls. It would be a shame to see such an impressive reputation for an urban school be brought down in shambles by prejudice and fear.
