The Easter Rising was an event that happened in Ireland in 1917, and it is one of the major events leading up to modern day Ireland.
The Irish had lost faith in the ruling English government for a while now, even dating back to major events like the Great Famine. The Irish were feeling like all complaints were falling on deaf ears and they weren't being treated very fairly, as though they had become second class citizens.
The aim was simple; to form an Irish government and become independent of English rule. This ideal became the soul reason why there was need for an armed uprising, as many believed that London should have no impact over Ireland. However, not everyone wanted a self governing providence.
The south of the country did not support the ways of the rebels, as Northern Ireland did and were more inclined to ally with the English in a war.
Dublin, was a small town, full of rebels, but compared to the population of Dublin, there were few people willing to take part in a rebel force. Such key figures in the Easter Uprising were the republicans Patrick Pearse and James Connolly.
By the start of the war, political business had become a very messy business. The ideal of home creation lead to a number of groups being creating such as the IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood soon to become the IRA) and Ulster Volunteers.
When World War I had broken out it had been agreed that every ideal of a home creation shall be put on hiatus. Many Volunteers accepted this and joined the British Army in order to defeat the Germans.
However, views were not shared by the IRB. They had concurred that the British involvement in the World War would leave them open to attack to try and overthrow the British in owning Ireland. The IRB hoped to free the Irish from the British while the British were distracted with world affairs.
It was months in the planning, but the one thing they had mostly was money, from Irish Americans. They were woefully short of weapons as well with other organisations that were rebelling against the British.
Despite all their planning, the Irish Intelligence Agency had caught word of an attack that was being planned fairly quickly, due to a political leader's arrest.
There were many people involved and politicians that were caught up in various of scandals before the Easter Rising, but they only provoked the North to continue on with their attacks.
Many a politician had assumed that the attack would be only small, because of the splitting of the Volunteers and with no weapons, what possibly could they do?
On April 1916, the IRB along with fellow organisations set up to destroy the British of their right to rule, set up in key locations of Dublin, and proclaimed several states of Irish independent rule of the British. There were only minor attacks happen on key places within Ireland, but nothing significant.
This uprising lasted for a week, and it's leaders were court martialled and executed, but it did succeed in bringing physical Republicanism into Ireland.
In January 1919, Irish republicans in the English parliament won the most seats concerning the topic of independence and it was declared officially by the Irish, as a free state free of English rule. But this, the English did not take lightly and denied Ireland the right to be an independent state.
