I agree with you! My Uncle played bass, so I always adore bass players. So much love for the Bassman!
It's not just Pheonix. I feel that Bad and Rob need to show their skills way more too on the upcoming songs. Although ATS was my favorite album by LP by far, i felt Mike and Joe really took over the sound (mike especially). I know the other membs were involved in the electronic production as well, but when it came to their instruments they didn't.
The idea of an album where each member brings there creativity to the max is just amazing to me. I would absolutely love to see them all being as creative as Mike...as hard as that would be and pushing their skills to the max! And also, just saying, I'm pretty sure Blackout is Phoenix's most flashy bass song...
think about it like this, the bassist has to match with screaming, rapping, guitar, drums, turntables, keyboard and other electronic sounds. so his got the hardest job and phoenix is doing great as a bassist anyway.
Just saw a video the other dave where Phoenix does some serious slapp bass at a high level. I think it was before a show or something.
I know there's proof of him playing some creative bass lines with the Tasty Snax, but as far as Linkin Park goes, I feel he has yet to be challenged. I'm definitely interested in seeing the video you described if possible.
I appreciate Phoenix and all, but the most interesting bass-line in a Linkin Park song is You Ain't Gotsta Gotsta.
Brad recorded most of the bass for Hybrid Theory (in addition to Ian Hornbeck and Scott Koziol). All Dave got was some song writing credits. But that's beside the point of the thread
If Slip and Blue were recorded when Phoenix was in the band (meaning HE did those bass lines and not Brad, Hornbeck, or Koziol) then that's insane. The bass in LP songs has been relatively buried, and here are two songs where bass is prominent and sounds awesome.
Phoenix and Chester were never in the band simultaneously until Phoenix rejoined permanently in late 2000 (Jeff Blue's picture of him with the Xero-era lineup doesn't include either of them, meaning Phoenix left before Chester joined), so all of the pre-Hybrid Theory demos with Chester singing would've either had Brad or another stand-in on bass. I really don't see how Slip and Blue are any more impressive than the majority of other tracks from that era either.
Pheonix needs to get on the mic for at least one song! Even if its just for a demo! Dude can kinda sing!
This. Also, didn't Kyle Christener record the bass in most of the 99-2000 era demos? I think he even appears in a video from that time.
Kyle did at least some of the bass on the Hybrid Theory EP (both he and Brad are credited with bass in the liner notes), so he's probably on some other demos from that period too, but there's really no way of knowing which ones. I'm not sure if Kyle ever performed with the band though. A lot of people thought it was him in the Jammin' With Hybrid Theory video (where the original clip of Slip was first heard), but that actually turned out to be Scott Koziol before he cut all his hair off.
