...parking...parking is what you base your freedom on? Please elaborate...otherwise I feel this is just a joke...
There's nothing wrong with feeling an attachment to your country of birth. It's normal. Definition of patriotism: love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it. If you're willing to defend your country from some megalomaniac, or you just love your country, then that's patriotism. There's nothing wrong with it.
Sure there's nothing wrong with it. I was only referring to the extremes...I mean...there barely are any people that actually love there country without being so...extreme about it. If someone says: I'm proud of being german. That's fine...but hardly anyone leaves it at that. it's more like: I'm proud of being german!11!1!! We're teh shit! we are like teh awesome!!!11!1 That's what really grinds my gears...
Oh yeah, I was serious about the parking thing when it comes to fact. I don't base the feeling for my country off of that, though. It was supposed to be said jokingly.
Loving a country and being proud are 2 really different things though. I agree with the former but find the latter in most cases silly.
Not unless I was instrumental toward it doing so. I'd think they were amazing, I'd be glad I was of that country, but I am not "proud" of something I didn't cause. I am Canadian, and I love Canada and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. But I am just proud things I actually accomplish, I don't feel the need to leach pride of other people's works.
Fair enough, I guess. I'd just be proud to say that I'm part of a country that actually did something to change the world.
I think patriotism has been skewed to have a negative connotation to it. Dont you think its a bit strange if you feel a bit put off by seeing someone waving their country's flag or colors? It didnt used to be like that, at least not in this country. Has 9/11 really devalued how we are supposed to feel as citizens of our country? When you see and hear about younger people hating their country, what is that about? I'm as frustrated and upset about the current status of this country as anyone but I will never say I hate it here. Ask yourself why you hate it here. Is it because you get access to high speed Internet? Is it because you can literally go out to eat at any time of the day? Or is it because you can vote for someone you believe in by law? Hate is a strong word and it is being too easily thrown around.
i think that my problems with america stem from the weird kind of patriotism we have here. for our independence day, it seems like its merely an excuse to drink and light fireworks.. i feel like in other countries theres a degree of thought and pride that people take in knowing their country fought to become free. i think we miss that in the US, and because we lack a national identity, we lack a kind of patriotism that bonds all of us together as americans and creates a love of not just where we live, but the entirety of a country that is the US-- meaning the land, the people, the history, and the actions of the country. i like patriotism when patriotism is synonomous (sp?) with love of country. i don't care for it when its used as an excuse to degrade others (america, fuck yeah type deal) or as a source of self-righteousness, though.
I'm proud of my country and proud of my flag, I always will be. I'm just not very proud with the direction the country has gone under this administration.
