In Pieces would have been a HORRIBLE single. No More Sorrow wouldn't have done better than Given Up (or it would've done worse), QWERTY on MtM is like having TLGYA on Hybrid Theory.

As singles go, Linkin Park are very smart...as MtM went, they didn't have too many good candidates

Sins don't necessarily have to be a "religious" thing either. If you take into consideration the theme of the album, thus far being a nuclear blast, or the nuclear bomb, along with all the other extremely fucked up things that we as a species have done to our planet, and even more so to our fellow human beings? All of those things should be considered sins as well.

I gather the song is about people being oppressed and shielded from the truth, and can only dream of living in a better world

This whole album has probably been "un-linkinparkinized" as Joe Hahn so succinctly put it. Lol. Can't wait to hear not only this song but the whole album. Sounds like LP is moving towards a more electronic/industrial sound, which begs the question: Is Trent Reznor ever going to tour with LP one day??? Man I would die and go to heaven.

Well, at least there's scratching in it.

Clips often do not represent a song well, so I'm not going to throw around my divine judgement until I hear the full song.

But with the "God bless us every one" verse the religious connotation is VERY strong, especially with the enumeration of "Sins of the father, of the son, etc."

Edit: And this again is so cliché that Derek might be right with saying it's irony.

14th song on the album as well and if it is following a pattern the lyrics are very fitting.

This. Regardless the message to me is that in a time of mass destruction we should come together and come to terms what we as a civilization have done. A nuclear event would be a man made fate we bring upon ourselves. "God bless you" is no more religiously exclusive than "God damn you" "God damn it". Even as an atheist I think people who get a stick up their ass about somebody telling them "God bless" are missing the point. It's just a statement. "Sin" is just a one syllable description of our misdeeds and corruption that happens to fit in the melody and tone of the song. The two being used together doesn't have to make things religious.

"God bless us every one" --> Probably a reference to God Bless America.
"Sins of our fathers" --> Those before us. Not God.

I think you're wayyy overthinking this angle.

Here, I'll take a stab at overanalyzation:

It's more likely a condemnation of the wrongs that the world has done in the past. It's probably not so much an anti-American song as it is an outcry against something like nuclear armament and proliferation (which runs along with the theme of the album), of which the U.S. (and Russia) are largely responsible for.

Is "God bless you" in America such a common saying? As I said above, the enumeration of sins done by father, son, etc. adds to the kind of biblical tone, and considering this and the bringing up of god further above indicates a christian influence. I just don't know in what way yet.

Edit: Maybe religion itself is more like a metaphor that is used in opposition to the dimensions of (atomic) violence...

I'm not sure why i'm replying to this because it is a bit off topic Anyways, huh? QWERTY is basically Bleed it Out with a longer bridge! And even if QWERTY was way different, none of the M2M songs go with each other..AT ALL. So it wouldn't have mattered. If QWERTY would have replaced Given Up, I would have loved that album so much more. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that.

About this clip, I'm so excited. We will hear this thing before August 2nd! If I'm wrong, I'll kiss Justin Bieber. Quote me. Lol i'm basically saying if 2+2 doesn't equal 4, I'll jump off a cliff.

    God Bless America,
    Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

That's a patriotic song, not a religious song. Therefore, God bless in this song can be political and not religious.

I think it is obvious that Mike's lyrics are a commentary on the band sneezing.

See, I always took the god bless us lines as kind of a fearing line, such in god bless us everyone, were a broken people living under loaded guns, here they are afraid,

About the whole "God bless us" thing. It doesn't necessarily point at a pro-christian or pro-religious message. It can just be a figure of speach or, like Derek says, something ironic.

Take Maynard James Keenan, he frequently uses imagery that would typically be associated with religion (like 10,000 Days or Right In Two) but he's quite against organised religion, he just uses it to get a point across.

I would lean towards it being a figure of speach or ironic for this, given what we're seeing of the direction of this new record. But of course we'll need the full lyrics to get the propper context.

And to demonstrate that for anyone who is interested I'll use this (since I was just listening to it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSSLXMzxxP8
Skip directly to 05:50 and listen for 30 seconds, try imagining how that part would fit in a prog death metal song..... ok, now go back and listen from the start.

Ah, so patriotism and politics seems to require a religious belief or a religious terminology in a way. I guess I know what you mean. I sometimes fail to understand the deep bond between religion and politics in America.

    Joe, I don't get your comment ^^

Edit: Or maybe I do, if it was aimed at our try of analyzing the lyrics :D
