Let's face it you don't want them to make a metal or a hard rock album and that's fine because I don't want them to make a soft album. But all I'm saying is
rock music is on life support its in the sewer right now, like it doesn't even exist anymore, LP can be the one's to bring it back and redefine it.

Whatever the sound may be, I would just like for them to be able to play the songs live.

Did Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tame Impala, Haim, and Arctic Monkeys all disappear off the face of the Earth? QotA and NIN were both just nominated for Best Alternative Album grammys, were picked to close out the night as the final performance, and got a ton of critical acclaim (as well as all the other bands I listed). Metallica was invited to perform at the Grammys as well, which is something I could never have imagined happening in 2014. One of the most critically acclaimed albums of last year, "Sunbather" by Deafheaven, is a partly prog metal album.

And I hardly listen to rock music. I'm sure someone else could add a ton of music to the list of artists I just mentioned.

People such as yourself and Mike keep saying that rock music is gone or is dying or sucks, and I'm just confused as to where that idea comes from.

Because waaa, music changes and I don't like that. All rock should have squawking singers with guitar solos spilling all over the place, all rap should be party rhymes over disco beats and all techno should be gone because it's not real music.

If I read correctly, Derek was just speaking about the credibility of Chester's comments

    2 quotes, one answer!

Looking at this, it seems like one of Mike problems is the lack of a certain sound which he is looking for but can't manage to find in the rock scene of today. I don't think there's much problem with that state of mind, as you and I could both, I think, also be frustrated with the lack of whatever sound. That state of mind is actually really cool in my book, because it might push to creativity, and it might even push to form bands to make that sound you're at loss of.

But now, I sure agree with you on a point. To go from a personnel frustration and goes on to say that a whole scene is dying because of that is maybe not the right thing to do.

Rock isn't dying or even close to it! Mike could find the bands that match his criteria by going to Sputnikmusic or something and looking up recommendations. The only problem is the kind of rock he was listening to growing up isn't pop music anymore. Just because it's not spoon-fed to the masses doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Not to mention how kinda of douchy it is for a member of Linkin Park to be making these claims given the style of music they were playing when they were starting out and their subsequent commercial success. It's like if instead of Kendrick Lamar, it was Big Sean on "Control" telling everybody to step their game up and stop sucking.

Rock/Metal isn't on top like it used to be in 90's and early 00's, I listen to hard rock and rap music. Today its all house, dubstep, teen dance music, and garbage hip hop. I'd say rock is a dying breed because of today's music.

In the mainstream, sure, but I would venture to say that all depends on what you're exposed to. This new "Underground Alternative" stuff isn't my cup of tea, but I've expanded my search and have found a radio station that plays stuff more suited to my taste. They don't play any real "Commercial" stuff and I think that's pretty awesome. They are the only radio station that I've heard play Unearth on. Anyways, Heavy Rock is still there, but it is almost like it is oppressed.

The idea that if it isn't popular it's dead is silly. Arcade Fire wasn't popular when they put out Funeral. Radiohead isn't a band you could ask about to a random person on the street and expect them to know who it is. On the flip-side, I've seen a lot of people say that EDM is dead because it's over-saturated. Good music is not good because lots of people know it.

So if someone wants to make the claim "Linkin Park is going to help bring hard rock back into the mainstream," that I could get. Although they certainly aren't alone given all the bands I mentioned before, they would be a huge name to add to the list.

But if someone wants to make extraordinary claims like "rock music is dead and Linkin Park is going to revive it," no. Rock music is not in need of a redefinition, it's alive and well. It just isn't what the general public is into.

Well that's what I mean LP will help bring back hard into the mainstream that of course if the next album is hard rock.

None of what Derek said was in response to what you said, or an argument against your position at all

Indeed, it's just public tastes changing. I don't know what LP - or anyone else - could do to bring rock music "back" from being unpopular ...

I like rock. I can handle hard rock. I can't stand metal. Unless this is Linkin Park's most innovative album to date (which is what it's looking to be), I will not even enjoy a hard rock/metal album. It's all my personal opinion, no offense to anybody who likes that stuff. I'm more into underground rock and alternative.

I will stop posting myself and just agree with everything Xero says. Guy knows.

But in all seriousness. There's little I could actually add to that. If Linkin Park are the ones to bring hard rock back into mainstream I would have to see it with my own eyes.

If anything, if the album ends up heavy, it will probably be very different from the casual modern hard rock record. Well, I would hope so. Just because it would be fun to have everyone surprised.

I can remember the first time I've listened to every single lead single LP has had for all their albums.

I'm really excited for that same experience. To be thrown into their new world of whatever kind of sound they've created.
