Yeah, you can do a lot more with a vocoder. Autotune serves an entirely different purpose.

 

I think the moral of the story is you record that shit live without robot voices and computer tweaks or you gtfo.

And vocoder and talkbox CAN be reproduced live. And is necessary to do some crazy effects. Autotune is the only post-production voice effect out of the 3.

Yeah, that's actually him playing the talkbox (the song is originally vocoder) to a Daft Punk song. That takes talent.

Hey now, vocoders have been used for decades now and in very talented, creative, artistic ways. I think autotune can be used artistically, too, but it has been abused terribly lately.

How do those of you that do join LPU go about it? I just went to Best Buy and bought the pack with the cd and t-shirt and then never did anything after registering for the store discount.

 

As a synth player I can tell you that everything Passport said is pretty much on the money. I own two synths with vocoder functions (microkorg and korg R3) and you have to actually understand musical notation in order to get any decent kind of sound.

 

I played vocoder and talkbox for my old band and it's in all actuality pretty hard to grasp. Especially when the melody you're playing is in a different pattern than the vocals.

 

Okay there we go, and that's the point I've been trying to make here. Vocoders are all good and well, but now I can't go to parties without cringing because the music is just one autotuned vocalist after another and it's pathetic.

 

I think the real question is when will LP start acting like real men and put some cowbell on one of their albums?
