The song's not emo at all. Generalizing their look as emo is really lame, too. It's like saying all metalheads with long hair are hippies. It just doesn't fly.
To be fair I never said they sounded emo at all. I actually have nothing against Lostprophets & their music, all I'm saying is they have changed a lot from album to album, and they do seem to be showing reference to what some may consider "emo" within their look etc. Yeah, I hate the term "emo" too but it's the quickest way to sum up what they have changed into. Even if it is lame.
Honestly, who cares how they dress or how they style their hair? I'm so tired of people worrying and commenting about those things instead of the music that it's getting God damn irritating.
I don't care, I'm just stating the fact that they have changed. Some may like it & some may not, but at the end of the day they have changed. Their music has changed too, TFSOP is a lot different from SS & I expect it to be. I don't have anything against them at all, don't get me wrong, It's just that in my opinion, they have changed & it's not for the better.
As much as I don't like to say it because I don't like using the word, the video and inspiration along with the new "style" do seem pretty emo. It may not be a word some people like to hear, but that's where this video and song fits in. I don't see how it's not -- I mean, just listen to the chorus: "Standing on the rooftops, Everybody scream your lungs out" (I think, this is just off memory). The way they dress is also in the emo-vein. Emo isn't a curse word... it's just a way of describing certain styles. I'd describe this song (and video, and their style of dress now) as emo, based on what I've seen so far. Does that mean the band is emo or that the album is? No, I'm just saying it's not far off base to call it emo. lostprophets media player: http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/LostProphets/mediaplayer/ EDIT: I should say I thought "Last Train Home" was a similar kind of song in terms of if I'd classify it as emo, though.
I see where you're coming from with the comments about their look and video, but I'd like to focus on the music here. When you look at the lyrics (instead of focusing on one line from the chorus), you can see the song is an introspective song about whether we've lived our lives to the fullest with the time we've had. It's about taking advantage of your opportunities and questioning what we've done with our lives. There aren't any stereotypical "emo" lyrics in there. Nothing about measuring up to your parents' expectations, nothing about losing a girlfriend, nothing about (and I hate to say this because I disagree with the overused and overgeneralized definition of "emo") slitting your wrists or commiting suicide because of the previous two examples (among others). I don't hear any whining in the lyrics, nor in the vocals. The video is a terrible explanation of the lyrics, and I don't know if the guys really agreed with it or if the label pushed the storyline on them, but it doesn't fit the band (both the storyline and their looks), and actually distracts from a perfectly normal song. I hate it when songs are misconstrued like that. The message of the video is misrepresentative of the message of the song.
I doubt the band cared about the video too much. They aren't known for their ground-breaking videos, like Linkin Park. None of their other videos made much sense, nor did they follow the song's lyrics.
Seriously. The hair has been discussed more in this topic than the music. I hate to repeat what others have said, but I'm waiting to hear the entire album to judge anything.
i agree with those who said the song is way too radio-oriented, because the chorus is just so damn repetitive. it doesn't sound like they've changed their sound from the last album, either. i do hope the rest of the songs are a step in the right direction.
I have only just heard Rooftops recently, and I think it's a good song. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
amen i think its a good track and its a good video we have to reserve judgement untill the album comes out before we jump to the term 'emo'
