Yah I'd definitely say that is accurate, maybe not Usher though. I mena I'd consider U2 to be the past also. Yah Gn'R has a pretty big fan base I mean Velvet Revolver is coming to Edmonton and their concert mostly sold out in 50 minutes in a internet presale. Plus when they didn't show up for thier concert 5 years ago in Vancouver there were huge riots accross teh city.
The genre with the largest fan base, believe it or not, is country. I don't know any country artist, doubt I ever will. But it is the most listened too and has the largest fan base.
That is because all country is alot alike. The songs have the same feel and they're basically about the same kinds of things. I'm not making fun of country or anything, that's just the way it is.
In the early/late 90s, Garth Brooks out-sold The Beatles & Elvis I believe, so I think Garth has a pretty large and solid fanbase. I'd imagine At The Drive-In had a decent amount of fans towards the end, since when they broke up, critics and fans alike were devasted.
I would have to say Dave Matthews Band and Phish because they have huge followings and tons of people like the jam band style of both groups.
