I don't think Green Day are Pop niether do I think they are Punk because the definition of Punk seems to have endless meanings nowadays. You can trash Green Day all you want about how they are just posers and aren't Punk at all but at the end of the day if they have become one of the most famous bands on the planet and this probably pisses off all these hasbeens like Johnny Rotten and the Buzzcocks because they could never achieve what Green Day have in just 15 years and now they're sitting at home remembering the good ol' days and watching their garden programmes on TV. The point of what I'm saying is that you should consider the source, Green Day have become mega successful and it pisses alot of these old guys off.
It's not that. It's the fact that almost all bands nowadays consider themselves punk when they're not. That's what pisses the old dudes off.
The fact that they think they can label non-conformity as a lifestyle (when it isn't even non-conformity in the first place) says all you need to know. The Sex Pistols are for people like my mother, trying to be down with the kids.
I figured someone was going to say that. All I meant was that The Sex Pistols are tame, and maybe if they actually sounded good then I would like them to a degree, but they don't. Fast forward to the year 2006 and people like Johnny Rotten are so far up their own arses they think they can dictate what has integrity and what doesn't, purely because they where offensive when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister and Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were two of the biggest acts around. Though I guess it wouldn't be hard to come across as offensive in that environment when all you have going for you (I use that term losely) is a song about wanting to be anarchy and not being able to play for shit.
Punk was never about having polished sound, or an angels' voice. The Clash didn't have it, neither did The Ramones. The Sex Pistols sure as hell didn't. As far as Rotten goes, yes, he can dictate what's important, because as far as I'm concerned, he's one of the fathers of punk. Would your opinion change if the Sex Pistols would have had 5 #1 singles, multimillion dollar contracts, and gold ablums? I'm guessing yes, considering your last sentence.
I'd have thought anyone who visits a Linkin Park board would know about a band not showing much musical ability while being one of the biggest bands in the world and having production that's so slick it really is wrong. I was referring to there being no attraction in their sound as far as I'm concerned. Reconsider my first point. Compare Johnny Rotten to someone like, say, Jello Biafra and it would be fair to say that the former would be better off presenting Cbeebies.
While I like Jello Biafra more as musician, I regard Rotten as being more important than Biafra to punk. And what is a Cbeebie? And I guess it's all just a matter of opinion. I love the Sex Pistols, you don't. Oh well.
