I've always liked Linkin Park's music, but I have a real problem with the way they've been marketed and a lot of dipshits from both sides have taken the bait. What I'm talking about is that ever since In The End became a hit, everyone on both sides reacted ignorantly, pretty soon lots of kids who would normally listen to shit like the Backstreet Boys or whatever picked up on the band, all the alternative radio stations and media that I hear of pretended they had nothing to do with them, and started saying shit about them such as accusations that they're a boy band and are a corporate band in an attempt to dilute heavy music in it's tamest form. And the reason this pisses me off is because not only is it not true, it's not even close to the truth, and as far as the standards of nu metal go, they're very much on the top end. And because of this I'm afraid to tell people that LP is one of my favourite bands because now people will think I'm like one of those losers or I've been misinformed, and I now can't accuse bands I think that actually do fit the above description (not prepared to name name's at this point) without the fear of being called a hypocrite. And I can't stand being called a conformist for being myself, because they're the ones that have their facts wrong (hey, if you dislike somethhing for the same reasonas those losers who only listen to wahts marketed to them, you're just as bad as them). I read at the Livid festival, where LP headlined, an Australian pop punk band called Frenzal Rhomb slagged them off on stage, telling people to stay tghe hell away from them because, as he puts it "I imagine they've got corporations paying them peercentages for everyone who sees them for their product placement" (real justice eh?),. I've done a bit of research though, and I've made a discovery: I don't think it's the bands fault, I think it's the record companies. How did I work this out? I read an interview with Kurt Cobain from Nirvana (when he was alive, obviously) about their feud with Pearl Jam. He said that he slagged them off because he didn't like the band. But he then went on to say that it was his own fault, and that he should've been slagging off the record company and not the band. What had happened was, Pearl Jam had been marketed, not probably against their will, but without realising they're being pushed into the grunge bandwagon (anyone who knows about the band recently will know that Pearl Jam are now getting revenge on their past). I'm almost certain the same thing is happening to Linkin Park. (if you replace grunge with nu metal) I've seen the band in interviews, I know the sort of people they are, if you ask me they're very much the Pearl Jam of the nu metal generation, they seem like the same sort of people to me. The way things are being done, the recent thing I read about how the band have sued their record company after being offended about the idea of playing in front of the New york Stock Exchange, and the way everything's going, the criticisms of charging too high ticket prices (which was also the case with Pearl Jam), Kurt Cobains comments about how PJ are a safe band that tries to get everyone to like them and a million more things I don't have time to list here, it seems to be going down the same path. I don't think LP are aware that they're used as a pro corporate tool by the record company, and everyone on both sides is taking the bait. The record company seems to be trying to wash LP down in the sewers with the likes of shit such as Good Charlotte and Evanescence, and the band seems to be unaware of whats going on. Like this case with them doing an album with Jay Z, i think the bands problem is that they don't realise the real reason they're being asked to do an album is due to their attempt to market them to a more teenybopper audience, and they're taking advantage of the fact that LP like Jay Z (when I first heard about the album being made I was pissed off about it until I actually heard it, it was actaully very good IMO, but the probelm isn't so much that than is the real reason why they're getting thele offers). Linkin Park have to stop trying to come to a compromise with the record companies, as least they're not stupid enough to do everything they say, but it seems to me that whenever a record company makes a suggestion they seem to try and come to a solution they can both agree on, and that's what's destroying they're career. If I was them, I'd sue the band double of what they're suing now, because of the record companies attempts to destroy them. I don't know whether you people will either agree with me or miss the point, but at least I've given you something to think about. i think what I said above answers a lot of questions about the band. But I'd appreciate what you think about this. Oh and one more thing, hi I'm new here.
nice point.if the companies continue to milk out money out of lp like this it will be a disaster.it`s not their fault(lp`s) that they`re overcommercialised.
LP should just leave the record company, which they are trying to do...but as you can see its really difficult....stupid commercialism....
I agree. They even put Breaking The Habit in ''Disney Kids'' and they also mentioned LP's Members birthdays. People today think everything if for kids. We'll see Linkin Park in KidsBop soon. XD
Respect, every single word you said is true in my eyes... You said exactly what I thought all the way... Wow! Great way to start your posting career at LPA
I agree with you too. I wear a LP necklace and (sometimes) one of the T-shirts I own, and I don't care what people think. But I have heard people say that LP are just milking it, but I feel that everything they've come out with is REALLY good (except CC, I don't like Jay-Z at all). Point is, LP are one of the best bands I've ever seen, right up there with Staind, Breaking Benjamin, Tool, etc. So when the record company sees this they realize they can use the band to do their bidding. Assholes  I'm not new here, but I jus never got around to posting, I found this topic to hard to pass up without sharing my to thoughts.
Who cares? People will never be happy. There's people who think that a band becomes too commercial when they make a music video. Some who think this when they change their sound a little bit. Some who think this when they're played on MTV or Fuse, and still some who will never really think this. The way I see it, I don't really care a whole lot if a band is well-liked, or if they "sold-out". I do however, like to be somewhat unique, so I usually won't wear merchandise or openly support bands that are popular (most of which I can't anyway, because of their music.) Granted, I'm not a big fan of Linkin Park. I never really was. I enjoyed them casually, but I was never near a big of fan as most of these people. However, if I was, I certainly wouldn't feel ashamed to admit it or anything. People are going to have opinions no matter what, so I honestly don't see the point in even acknowledging it, personally. But whatever, I need to go eat turkey.
My point wasn't so much about how popular they were, but more about how they're marketed, and the way the record company is using them. I bet if the record company read this they would like to do what they can to avoid the band from reading this, and/or feed the band a load of bullshit about this topic to manipulate it to their advantage. Well, maybe I'm overreacting, but it's a possibility. To Casey- are you saying that like there's something strange about what I said. OK I don't 100% know, but from my knowledge and everything I know about them, I can't come to any other conclusion that it is utter bullshit, and I think I'm more informed than those who claim otherwise. Although I read that the real reason a lot of people accuse them of this is because they're from a genre they don't like but they don't have any real reason to accuse them of anything because they're so perfect at what they do, they accuse them of this shit to make up for what they really think. Which is a really weak and pathetic attitude that helps no one. I'm not claiming any of my opinions to be fact, but I have read people on the other side of the argument who have claimed what they say to be fact, so...
I kind of agree with you, but to be honest if people think that i listen to a bunch of sell-outs it doesn't bother me...what with the other stuff i listen to and the amount of chavs in my local area i'm used to worse critisicm than that of my favourite bands, and again if people don't like your music, who cares you're not forcing them to listen to it.
fuck no. you know i dont really give a shit on what people think bout linkin park. i mean they can tell me whatever they want. the things is that i started listening to linkin park when they were far away from where they rest right now. the disney crap makes me rip the walls off. im sure none of them really got the meaning of "breaking the habit". it has nothing to do with a kids channell. i fear that one day linkin park will play for these kids in a show. if this points reached, i will stop listening to them because itll get too scary. at least everyone can take "hybrid theory" as an example. it is great music with depth. nothin for kids.
first off linkin park isnt dumb. 2nd its not about sueing for money, they just want to leave the record company altogether. and third WB didnt ask them to work with jay-z MTV did. get your facts strait son.
Actually, the dispute is over money. I'm sure Mike had been wanting to colab with Jay-Z his whole life.
As long as the members of LP make money and can do what they love (=making music and playing live) they won't complain but if they want to make everybody happy they will have to leave record company that's what i think
wtf?? you'd be willing to sue the band?! like what's been frequently said around here; it's not LP's fault they've been overcommercialised. the responsibility is that of the record label.
