Not really news, but whatever:

The New York Daily News is reporting LINKIN PARK frontman Chester Bennington blasted a Mansion nightclub bodyguard, alleging that the security man had shoved his pregnant girlfriend. "He was forcibly pushing her away with his arm and I had to get in between them," Bennington said. "So I shoved him back." The rocker revealed that he may bring legal action against the club, and said he spit on one of the bouncers as he stormed away from the party.

Bennington is currently working on his solo debut, tentatively due in early 2006. The singer is reportedly working with producers (and ORGY members) Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck on the as-yet-untitled CD. Songtitles set to appear on the album include "Morning After" and "Walking in Circles". Bennington is said to be "especially psyched" about a new song, which a friend says "sounds like T. REX," according to RollingStone.com.

LINKIN PARK's sophomore album, "Meteora", sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, and the band's most recent release, last December's mash-up album with rapper Jay-Z, "Collision Course", debuted at the top of the chart.

Chester To Play At Katrina Relief Show Broadcasted On MTV

Usher, Green Day, Ludacris and Alicia Keys are among the artists who have signed on for a Hurricane Katrina relief concert that will span four cities, three television networks and several musical genres.

Dave Matthews Band, Rob Thomas, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, David Banner, Gretchen Wilson and John Mellencamp will also take part in the shows, which will be staged in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Nashville on September 10 and will air live on MTV, VH1 and CMT. Additional artists will be added to the lineup soon, and proceeds from the show will go to the American Red Cross.

"In the face of a tragedy of this scope, we simply have to do everything in our power to offer support, comfort and hope to all the people directly impacted by the hurricane," Judy McGrath, chair and CEO of MTV Networks, said Wednesday (August 31) of the concerts. "Our goal is to join forces on every medium to get involved, to volunteer, to contribute in any way we can."

The concerts are part of a larger awareness campaign that will also include an MTV News special on Katrina relief efforts, on-campus resources, and information across all the network's channels regarding aid and activism.

MTV's parent company, Viacom, also announced that it has contributed $1 million to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Effort.

Hundreds are feared dead and tens of thousands are without shelter in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in the hurricane's wake (see "Katrina Devastates New Orleans; Mississippi Death Toll Rises To Over 110"). Flood waters continued to rise in New Orleans on Wednesday, further plunging the city into chaos. President George W. Bush has called the hurricane "one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." He devoted federal resources to the aid effort, but called on private citizens to do their part as well.

Mike says that LP is not on hiatus

MIAMI — Before Mike Shinoda started a little rap-rock band called Linkin Park, he spit rhymes over his own homemade beats. It was modest, to say the least, but a few years ago he started missing it.

"I got antsy," he recalled over the weekend at the MTV Video Music Awards (see "Green Day Clean Up, Kelly Clarkson Gets Wet, 50 Rips Into Fat Joe At VMAs"), the official coming-out party for his new side project, Fort Minor. "I wanted to make hip-hop again. You know, I always have to mix it with other things, and I didn't want to have to mix it. I just wanted it to be pure hip-hop."

During breaks from Linkin Park, Shinoda started messing around again on his samplers. He recruited his friends in Los Angeles underground hip-hop duo Styles of Beyond and then Kenna and the Roots' Black Thought, and eventually Common and John Legend. "All of a sudden Jay-Z is the executive producer and it's like a real record," Shinoda said (see "Linkin Park MC Builds A Fort With Jay-Z, Common, John Legend").

Shinoda and Jay became chums while making Collision Course, last year's groundbreaking mash-up album. He came on board to steer the Linkin Park rapper, but does not appear on the album.

"We didn't get any new rhymes from Jay, and I will say this about it: I respect his retirement," Shinoda explained. "People make a big deal about him getting on records and all this stuff and I don't want to be any kind of fuel to that fire. If Jay wants to get on our mixtape that's a different story. I think the record is a Fort Minor record — it has its own identity without Jay on it."

Along with Jay, Shinoda looked to another source for guidance — Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson.

"Since this record is coming out on Machine Shop, our label, I could pick anyone I wanted to work on it, so I chose Brad as our A&R guy, which is hilarious because ... Brad's not a label guy, he's my friend," Shinoda said. "I've known him since I was like 13 years old and he can come in and say, 'Hey, that song, it's good, but trash this part of it and do this differently,' and I will actually listen to him."

Shinoda has full support from Linkin Park, whose singer, Chester Bennington, is also working on a solo album.

"I would have never done this record if I didn't have the blessing of the rest of the guys," Shinoda said. "We're not, like, on hiatus. We're working. We're very serious about our records, and I know the guys are at home right now writing. Hopefully we are looking at next year for a record."

In the meantime, Shinoda is treating Fort Minor just as he would a Linkin Park release. He just returned from a short European tour (with Styles of Beyond and drummer Beat Down backing him up) and is planning a Stateside outing after he shoots the video for the first single, "Petrified."

"It's a change of pace from what people would expect me to do with Linkin Park," he said of the track. "It's got that spirit in there because it's me, but definitely like a different kind of song, like it's a little bit of trash-talking."

"Petrified," as well as the recently leaked "Remember the Name," will be featured on Fort Minor's album, The Rising Tied, due November 22. Shinoda wrote all of the music on the LP and played every instrument, except for the strings on a few of the tracks.

"I feel like hip-hop right now is a lot of keyboard and minimalist stuff, and something I personally wanted to do is bring some of that organic feel back to it, that '90s hip-hop, maybe the Boogie Down Productions or that Native Tongues type of thing or Wu-Tang Clan. So it's a lot of live instrumentation, but it stills bangs like a sample."

"Linkin Park will definitely like this record ... but it's not as safe as what he used to do," Styles of Beyond's Ryu added.

New Fort Minor song entitled "High Road"; "Believe Me" to be first single?

How do you thrive in the shadow, substantial and arena-sized, of a group that has sold over 35 million albums? If you're Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, the answer is: shine your own light. Shinoda is half the vocal firepower of the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning band Linkin Park, trading diaphragmatic diatribes with singer Chester Bennington and infusing the searing alternative rock with equally intense hip-hop. From album to album, Shinoda and his bandmates have garnered a reputation based on their appetite for striking new ground. On his first outing alone, Shinoda is ready to show people that he is still hungry.

Shinoda's rap roots have always had to share space with other elements-until now. Fort Minor is a wholly unique, unadulterated hip hop album, owing as much to Shinoda's polished lyricism as his musical adeptness. The variety of themes, styles, and moods he creates make this "side project" likely to do much more than simply satisfy existing LP fans; it threatens to expose Shinoda as a rap devotee who is as at home in hip-hop as he is in the cross-genre hybrid of Linkin Park.

The Rising Tied, the much-anticipated debut of Shinoda's Fort Minor, will be released by Machine Shop Recordings/Warner Bros., November 22, 2005. Executive Produced by Jay-Z (who collaborated with Linkin Park on 2004's Collision Course), The Rising Tied is produced and mixed by Shinoda, who wrote every track, played nearly every instrument and "slaved over every detail."

While Shinoda chose the name Fort Minor to reflect the dynamic between opposites - something big and strong vs. something small and slight (or musically dark) - the name of the album is also a play on words. All of the guest artists on The Rising Tied, says Shinoda, are coming up together in the music world. Among them are Machine Shop acts Styles of Beyond and Holly Brook, as well as Common, John Legend, Kenna and Black Thought (of The Roots), among others.

While remaining an essential shard in the mosaic of Linkin Park, the desire to create songs that resonated with his youth as a hip-hop producer and MC led Shinoda to write, then record, a progression of hip-hop-rooted songs. As they began to coalesce into an album bearing Shinoda's solo imprimatur, he also felt it was essential to keep it "organic," making his own samples and breakbeats with live instruments, and avoiding sequenced keyboards. The Rising Tied, channeling some of the signature dynamics and frustration of Linkin Park, reveals a more personal range of themes slagged inside a distinctly hip-hop crucible.

Not to say that it's an entirely homogenized collection. On the first single, "Believe Me," excerpts from a decaying relationship tremble over a seismic breakbeat, infused with Latin percussion and a cello-bass line that reflects Shinoda's love of classic rock. "High Road," bouncing to Billy Joel-like piano progressions, adopts a humorous tone even as it gives the finger to someone who once told him to "stick to keyboards, don't rap."

More funny business comes into play in "Remember the Name," with Shinoda transforming a traditional rapper's brag into a subtler call for respect, all done in the third-person. What's the formula for success? Shinoda answers, in a walking tempo, "This is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name."

Another song that shifts traditional perspectives is "Where'd You Go?," a lament for those on the road as felt through the experience of those left behind. Shinoda warns, "'Where'd You Go' makes my wife cry every time she hears it."

On "Right Now," inspired by Robert Altman's iconoclastic film Short Cuts, Shinoda, Black Thought, and S.O.B. offer a hodgepodge of scenes, invoked to the rhythm of a chopped-up piano loop, which stitch together disparate lives during any given moment. Home-town pride inspires Shinoda's unexpected and highly personalized picture of Los Angeles in the candid "Back Home," while sarcasm drives the irresponsible zeitgeist of "Petrified," a precarious anthem built on swagger, fear, and the heaviest beat since Ice Cube's "Wicked." Clearly, the most unique song of this album - or any album, for that matter - is a rap-flavored recollection of the U.S. internment of Japanese citizens during World War II. "Kenji," featuring the voices of Shinoda's aunt and father who were interned in the U.S. during the 1940s, paints a bleak picture of those who lost everything after being thrown into what were known then, euphemistically, as "relocation camps." Shinoda explains, "I went to the Japanese-American National Museum in L.A. last year, and it reminded me of all the stories my family had told me, how they were put into internment camps here in the U.S., not because they had done anything wrong, but simply because they fit a profile. I had to write a song about it." With Fort Minor and The Rising Tied, Shinoda appreciated the chance to tackle a new theme outside the normal subject matter of Linkin Park.

Tackling big goals seems to be Shinoda's modus operandi. Notwithstanding an expectation to pursue a career in the visual arts, Mike decided instead to become a musician while working toward his B.A. in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Having already taken ten years of piano lessons, he first began to work as a hip-hop MC and producer. In the mid-1990s Shinoda joined with guitarist Brad Delson, turntablist Joseph Hahn, drummer Rob Bourdon, bassist Phoenix and vocalist Chester Bennington to form Linkin Park. The band's debut, Hybrid Theory, became the worldwide #1-selling album of 2001, earning a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance ("Crawling") and various other awards. Its subsequent albums - Reanimation, Meteora and Live in Texas - have continued to widen the band's fan base and critical acclaim; all together the catalogue has sold upwards of 35 million albums. On July 2 in Philadelphia, Linkin Park performed as part of the African aid/debt relief effort Live 8, to a live audience estimated at nearly one million people.

Mike Shinoda's personal philanthropic efforts are growing as well. In the past five years, he has started a scholarship at his alma mater and been involved in groups such as United Way, AIDS Project L.A., Densho, the Japanese American National Museum, Arthritis Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year, Linkin Park launched Music For Relief, an organization to aid the rebuilding of Southeast Asia; the band played a sold-out show in Los Angeles to support the cause, raising over $2 million for relief efforts.

A four-disc DVD set of the nine international concerts held on July 2nd as part of Live 8, an initiative organized by Bob Geldof to pressure the G8 to address extreme poverty in Africa, will be released on November 8th. A "generous" royalty from sales of the package -- which features performances from artists ranging from Paul McCartney's duet with U2's Bono on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" to Pink Floyd's reunion -- will go to the Band Aid Trust for African relief.
The first three discs focus on the shows at London's Hyde Park and at Philadelphia's Museum of Art, with highlights from the events in Paris, Rome, Berlin, Tokyo, Moscow, Toronto and Johannesburg. In addition to the McCartney/Bono concert opener, duets include McCartney and George Michael, Stevie Wonder and Maroon 5's Adam Levine, and Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft.

Their performance was terrible. I love Audioslave but I watched Black Hole Sun on AOL Music and I had to turn it off halfway through, I couldn't stand it.

Live 8 Four Disc DVD announced

A four-disc DVD set of the nine international concerts held on July 2nd as part of Live 8, an initiative organized by Bob Geldof to pressure the G8 to address extreme poverty in Africa, will be released on November 8th. A "generous" royalty from sales of the package -- which features performances from artists ranging from Paul McCartney's duet with U2's Bono on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" to Pink Floyd's reunion -- will go to the Band Aid Trust for African relief.
The first three discs focus on the shows at London's Hyde Park and at Philadelphia's Museum of Art, with highlights from the events in Paris, Rome, Berlin, Tokyo, Moscow, Toronto and Johannesburg. In addition to the McCartney/Bono concert opener, duets include McCartney and George Michael, Stevie Wonder and Maroon 5's Adam Levine, and Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft.

The third disc closes with the entire Hyde Park lineup performing the Beatles' "Hey Jude." The final disc features a behind-the-scenes documentary of the London show, Pink Floyd's reunion rehearsal and other extras.

"I hope this will be the biggest-selling DVD of all time," says Geldof. "It deserves to be. More importantly, perhaps, it should be, for it will help us achieve our goal of changing the lives of the extreme poor for the better and making our generation the one that helped end the disgrace of poverty."
