    Talkin it up!

Linkin Park 'Challenge' Themselves On New Album
'Nobody else is making a record that sounds like this,' Mike Shinoda says.

Forget all the talk of "concept records" and "grandiose insanity." On their new album, Linkin Park are going back to their roots in order to make the most challenging record of their career.

On Tuesday, MTV News spoke to LP co-frontman Mike Shinoda about his band's just-launched Download to Donate for Haiti project and, in the process, we managed to get some new information about the band's much-anticipated follow-up to 2007's Minutes to Midnight, which has been in the works for more than a year now. And while he still maintains that LP will be doing their fair share of growing on the new record, it's important to know that they're also not ignoring their past — quite the opposite, in fact.

"The album is going really well — we decided to go with Rick Rubin again, he's been in the studio with us. And we've been working in a different studio than we did the last record in, we decided to go back to the studio we did Hybrid Theory and Meteora in," Shinoda said. "It's been going great, I feel like it's an entirely different process and an entirely different style of music than anything we've done before. It's hard to place. People keep asking me, 'What does it sound like?' and it's hard to describe. When people hear it, they're going to have a tough time saying that it falls into a category.

And while talk like that might freak out some of the band's core audience, Shinoda cautions that it's just part of the natural growth of the band. After all, they've been doing this for more than 13 years now.

"I'll say this: I think on the last record there was a lot of personal growth that happened. We individually broke down a lot of boundaries — creatively and personally — with each other. We were friends making an album together — it wasn't painful and heart-wrenching the way some of the other records were," he said. "We had a really good time making Minutes to Midnight, and now I feel like we've grown from that point, where we've kind of knocked down the boundaries to a place where we're making an album that has a sound, that has a consistent thread running through it, and we're making something with this open-minded creativity that feels good."

But the still-untitled album (which Bennington told MTV News late last year could be out in June) isn't going to be some hazy, lazy conceptual thing, some by-product of a bunch of well-heeled musicians' studio wonkery — far from it. Even though they're one of the hugest rock bands on the planet, Linkin Park still feel like they've got something to prove, even if it's only to themselves.

"We make records as a challenge to ourselves," Shinoda smiled. "And the challenge this time is: 'Nobody else is making a record that sounds like this, only we can do it.' "

I was tempted to post that but to be honest it's nothing new. We've already posted a couple of similar interviews in the past few weeks were Mike has talked up the new album...posting this would just be repeating ourselves.

But if any of the staff feel like it's newsworthy then go right ahead. :)

Naa, Derek has already mentioned and quoted that interview a while back in one of the news threads, but thanks anyway.

Found this on Linkin Park Times (sorry, they didn't post the link and I really couldn't find it). It's the same old same about Download to Donate and stuff. One new, let down and I guess unsurprising thing is that the new album is now targeted at the end of the year.

Do you have an offical article or anything, or is it just hearsay?

Thanks for the link but unless the band comes out and gives a significant piece of info about the release date i.e. an exact date or month or it being pushed back til 2011, I don't think it's wise to speculate. We know so far it's coming out this year, lets leave it at that. :)

And honestly, if the album IS pushed back to the end of the year...as long as that means it's going to be better (i.e. more work put into it) then I'm fine with that.

I predicted a while back in a news post that it'd be late summer/fall that the album would come out. I said it was 'estimated' to be out and some attacked me in the news thread saying I was posting rumors as fact [when I didn't claim it to be so], and now Mike is saying it could be the end of this year as well.

It makes sense. I'm still not going to post it in news (since it's "unconfirmed") but think about it...Dead By Sunrise has yet to tour the US, and if they don't tour or release another single it would kind of be a waste of an album. Chester has said for a while that he wants to tour with DBS, but that LP takes priority. So assuming the band finishes recording in the late spring/early summer...that allows Chester to go on tour for 2-3 months, meaning the album could come out by Late July or August/September. Hence, end of the year.

It makes sense to me, but I'm not in the band so I won't make assumptions.

It was me and I didn't attack you. It sounded like it's "estimated" by the band and I couldn't find the source, that's why it even began. But it's a case closed for me.

As for this, I know it's not newsworthy, just wanted to point that out, hope that's ok I did it in this thread.

Personally I think there's no debate about the possible release date. As long as I remember delays (even if related only to guessed dates) are always true and this comes straight from the source... so no album until the end of the year that has just begun.

It's water over the bridge. I wasn't still mad about it when I made the above post, it was just annoying to have a tiny part of my news post picked apart. I got over it a long time ago though .

And to me this means they're not treating this album like just another CD. They're taking more time...which hopefully results in a great album. They just need to drop the whole "re-write a song 97 times" mentality. Sometimes the first option is the best.

Well...IMO, the extra time didn't really do much for them on MtM. They could have branched out into different genres in a much shorter time. I expected a much more refined sound even with the increased number of genres with the 4 year gap between Meteora and MtM, so this extra time shiz doesn't do much for me.

Yeah, obviously, I think the new album will sound like a more focused effort than "Minutes To Midnight" was and I have a feeling that it'll be out really early next year at latest.
