If he doesn't start then Steve McClaren really is a bastard. Hell, with those two performances against Russia and Israel I'd probably have kept Heskey in the starting lineup if he wasn't injured. There's no reason for Barry not to be starting against Estonia.
that is true, i hope mclaren has more sense to pick Barry over Lampard...and recently ive been thinking about it i think Carson should be England No.1, i mean look at it, he's the best English keeper in the BPL by statistics and what not
people often overlooked that because of Lampard's great improvement when Abramovich first took over and subsequently Lampard's outstanding goal return so....
Let's face it, Lampard is hugely over-rated. People think that just because he can score for 30 yeards that he's the best English midfielder we have. Fact is that when Lampard's in the team, the team loses out hugely down to the fact that Gerrard is pushed back to the holding role which is bollocks because Gerrard is an attacking player. I'll take nothing away from some of Lampards performances but I'd choose Gerrard over him for the attacking CM role any day. That means that the holding role should go to someone like Gareth Barry. I'd probably want Barry to be the man because I feel Hargreaves and Carrick aren't consistant enough and although we don't see Barry too much in the national team, he always makes good when he's given his chance.
England need Scholes. Unfortunately they can't have him. I'd play Gerrard--Carrick* with Barry on the left. On the Lampard Gerrard issue, I think they're both about the same standard of player in different ways - and both very good but not really great players. Neither really "run" a midfield in the way that you expect great midfielders to do. They are both impact players and have a tendancy to go missing for large amounts of time. I can only speak for Carrick and Hargreaves as i've seen them alot, and say they always are looking to receive the ball from defence and pass it on, which is something Lampard and Gerrard don't do as often. Lampard can't work in a 2 man midfield, he's too lazy and spends his Chelsea time playing in front of 2 solid DM's in Essien and Makelele usually. *Possible bias.
that is true, however Gerrard is somewhat like Robbie Savage, he's everywhere but not where he is supposed to be when it matters the most...
