Yeah, I agree. I was just trying to make people realize why he would say things like that. I don't think he completely understands, and he definitely shouldn't be hated or disliked for that. It is scary for the old guys, and I see why.
most people probably hate him because he doesn't give a fuck about his music or anyone elses. he's "in it to win it", as they say. just making music and living off his name and the band for the money and sex. he constantly brags about his tongue and how he's slept with over 500 women or some such shit. i would say drugs, too, but the fucker is too old for drugs.
To be honest, I wouldn't mind living that way at all. Good for him. EDIT: Except I will never be too old for drugs.
Hey Gene, I just downloaded the entire KISS catalog! I already owned most of it already, but oh well.
He's actually totally right about how it's stealing. But fuck the record industry, bands can promote themselves now. And he seems like he couldn't care less about anything other than money, so screw him.
Fair enough then. I usually try to stay as far away from Kiss or anything to do with them as possible. Except Rock School.
@Zak: So I downloaded Dave's (Dedicated) bands EP from his signiture. Did I steal his music? When my friends band gave me a copy of his bands CD for free, was he breaking the law? Of course not because free music is helping them make their names just like it is helping hundreds of thousands and even millions of bands make their names. Back in the 70s and 80s, bootlegged tapes and vinyls were one of the most effective ways of promoting bands and it's the same today except now it's CDs and MP3s. Sorry if it scares old man Simmons but he's had his day and it's time for people like him to accept that in this growing technological age, there's only going to be more ways to download music for free.
Did you read what I said? If the label has been given ownership over a recording, and you take that from them in a way they didn't intend, you're stealing that from them.
Yeah I did read what you said thanks. I don't see it as stealing the music myself. I see any free downloading of music as a way of promoting a band and getting a taste of something you might like. What I think is stealing is charging between £10-20 for a CD, around £40 for concert tickets and absurd amounts for merchandise. I also think it's stealing from the artist's talents when they get next to fuck all that's made from their music. So don't talk to me about stealing, Zak. It's daylight robbery some of the prices they charge for artist's music, concert tickets and merch. Less well-off people simply can't afford it...hell, even well-off people will tell you that prices for music related stuff are absurd. Is it any wonder that people turn to free downloading? If labels and rich bastards like Gene Simmons wanna bitch about free downloading then maybe they might consider significantly reducing the prices of everything music related. Until they do, the whole argument of free downloading is 100% irrelevant if you ask me.
You didn't read anything I said thanks. If you did, you would have read that I'm on your side, I agree with all of those points, and I think what they're doing is bullshit and corrupt. If you actually did read what I said, I said that if the label owns the right to distribute something the way they wish, and you take it from them in a way they didn't intend, you are stealing what they own and have the right to charge you for. You can argue morals of the law all you want, but you are stealing from them, however ridiculous you think their prices are. Hey, I think the Playstation 3 is ridiculously overpriced. Well, until Sony lowers the prices, I'm going to go jack myself a Playstation, instead of pay for it, and all of the games I want for it. The game developers aren't being paid enough anyways..
I steal music. I stole music from my brothers band. He didn't seem to upset though when I made a cd of it and gave it to some people at school. They liked it, his band got a few fans. But in the end that band broke up, but now he's in a new band and once they get material recorded I'm going to distribute it just like I did before.
I know but I was just trying to basicly say that I agree, "stealing music" and "destributing it" actually helps bands instead of harming them.
I think you're missing our point. The artists get hardly anything from record sales. The labels get most of the profits. So we're not hurting the artists by "stealing" their music, even though it is technically stealing.
I know it's not hurting the artists. I don't know how many times I'll have to say that. I'm saying that you're hurting the record labels by stealing what they own. Even if you think the labels are corrupt, they own it, and you're stealing it from them.
