Emo and Emotional have two very different meanings. Emotional basically means to spur a sort of feelings (usually touched or sadness) it need not be a negative feeling as well. Example, if you listen to Naruto's "Sadness and Sorrow", that instrumental is very emotional even without lyrics. Emo, in the modern day context, just means you hate the world wanna suicide why is everything happening to me I wanna cut myself oh my fucking god I love weed oh my fucking god why you break up with me, ya know? On topic: Minutes To Midnight was my favourite album because it was the album that didn't need propersong sequencing yet is still big in proportion. I mean, proper songs transition are nice but look where it took Meteora. Even Hybrid Theory didn't have that much and we are still able to listen to the songs on their own. On Meteora, the ending of some songs included a one second intro of the next... Anyway, Minutes To Midnight is my favourite album except for the flaw that is What I've Done. Across The Line should have taken it's spot, Mike said it almost made the cut but I think it got defeated by the power of Justin Bieber.
I loved the Minutes to Midnight era. I was introduced to Linkin Park from that and ever since then I loved how they experimented with this album. Yeah it might not be their best album but to me I just loved the songs. It's not anything you would have really expected from Linkin Park and I like that. It's natural, clean (no crazy electronic layers), and pure rock (imo). Really I could listen to Minutes to Midnight all day and not get tired of it.
I disagree. MTM as an album was a bit all over the place. It lacked coherence. You listen to the album and you know that the band was going through an identity crisis. Yes, it did help LP break free from the nu-metal curse but I still think it was a transitional album for them. Songs like WID, NMS, Given Up, BIO, VD were just way too lackluster. I appreciate MTM because it helped LP to broaden their landscape of sound/genres but overall the album itself very lackluster.
I can see that. For me it's just personal preference with Minutes to Midnight; at times I just like to keep it simple, and to me MTM was that. I appreciate the songs themselves and while half the album did have that "lackluster" as you put it, I just remind myself "Linkin Park made these songs so that they can see what else they can do without sounding like their older stuff" so I kind of gave them some slack for that cause they were new to it.
Yes unfortunately I forgot we have Drum Song... But yeah, I'm referring to the one in the LPU contest video where Mike sung the more complete version of the song.
Chester is layered in the finished "In Between." I know what you were saying, but, I found out a couple of months ago after listening very closely.
I think that MTM has some good songs (In Pieces, The Little Things Give You Away, and LOATR), but it just sounds like they scrapped a bunch of songs together. Yes, I enjoy LOATR, but I do think it would be better without the gutair. I do not think it is their best effort though.
As someone mentioned previously, being able to hear some of the heavy demos that LP recorded originally for MTM would be amazing. I remember from the 2005 LPU chat, Chester said ''I couldn't even go into the studio the next day because of all the screaming I did.'' He also was getting divorced and was living on Ryan Shuck's couch at that point though, (as stated in the chat), so the heaviness and screaming could have been born out of the feelings he was having. Who knows. I don't think we will ever get any of this awesome stuff, sadly...
To you guys who don't like given up, you're fucking crazy. Chesters screams to this day gives me chills.
For me, "Given Up" is a good song, but it's not that great compared to other LP songs. It's also the worst possible choice for a single since it's not suited for mainstream radio.
I know that a good majority of LP fans do not like Given Up, but I am borderline obsessed with the song. I have loved it ever since I heard the Berlin 2007 rip and the studio clip from lp.com. I love the raw, heavy, punk vibe to the song, and the screaming is crazy. The story behind the song is also cool.
Screaming does not automatically make a song good... although I will admit it's pretty cool in a live setting if Chester nails it.
Given Up is one of my favourite heavy songs from the band. I feel like while the lyrics are indeed cliche at points, the song is one of the truest essences of anger the band has ever delivered. I feel pissed off when I listen to it, which is something only And One and QWERTY have otherwise been able to do to me. And those that complain about the swearing in the song, there's no word that could really replace "FUCK" without ruining the vibe of the song - pure, powerful rage.
Honestly, people call it cliche but i look at it as It's relate-able. A lot of people can relate to the lyrics, a lot of people want to given up at some point, people call it cliche but i think the lyrics are more than that
Minutes enabled LP to really step up their live shows I reckon. The sheer rawness of those songs brought another dimension to their shows and allowed them to really broaden their outlook. Also, Given Up is epic. That and No More Sorrow live, there is no better feeling than that. Chills man, Chills.
This. MTM was a bit cliche and fit what was going on with most rock music at the time where as ATS was quite avant garde.
I could not agree more - Linkin Park's set lists from 2007-2008 I found were their best due to the sheer diversity. They had the perfect balance between heavy energetic songs and softer crowd pleasers. Whereas the ATS tour has nothing but ballad after ballad... The band REALLY needs to bring back The Little Things to the live show. And I really don't understand the people who want No More Sorrow off the set because it's now "stale". I've never even been to a concert, yet the intro sends shivers down my spine EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
