I always have a lot of questions regarding school work so I figured I should make a thread for everyone to ask all of their work related questions. Yes, I have a couple.

1.) When a person in the hospital is given intravenously (an I.V.) the fluid is typically a saline (salt) solution with about the same water concentration as human body tissues. Explain how the use of distilled water in place of this saline solution would be expected to upset the patient's homeostasis. Your answer should refer to the process of diffussion.

2.) Popcorn sold at most movie theaters is very salty causing people to become thirsty and buy soft drinks. Describe in scientific terms why the salt popcorn causes this thirst. You should mention changes in specific body cells in your answer.

3.) In many animals, gluclose, rather than starch, is transported by the blood through the body to all the cells. Starches in many foods are digested to yield gluclose. Based on what you learned in this laboratory activity, exlpain why the disgestion of starch to gluclose is necessary.

I'm having trouble on those questions. I would really appreciate any help on them. :)

    2) Salt absorbs water, therefore it would absorb the water in your body making you need to replace it.

also, I think soft drinks are bad for rehydration, but I'm not sure.

i'll think about them and see if i canhelp you more, when i'm dressed and my mum isnt walking in.

edit: wikipedia.org is god, it might help you.

All I know is that salt soaks up the body's fluids or something.

So now not only do I have to do my homework, but your's too?!

For number 2, put something like: The salt in the popcorn will absorb water from the bodys cells. The human body is around 70% water, so this water will need to be replaced. The body will react by becoming thirsty, so the customers will buy drinks.

Try and expand on that a bit. I can't find any specifics, sorry

Edit: question 3 is confusing me, and I can't make sense of it. It seems pretty simple though. Just explain the process of diffusion from whatever to whatever, and it needs to diffuse so it can slip into the bloodstream, etc. I haven't got around to any of this yet, so I don't quite know if I'm right.

1)Saline is important, becuase if it does not have the same water concentration, then the cells become hydrophillic and try to absorb as much water as possible to even out with the solution around it, thus causing it to burst.

The converse is true as well, when the solution is too salty then the cells become hydrophobic and force water out to become equalized with thier surrounding solution and thus shrivle up

    Both instances the cells die.

Ok! Now off to my HW!

    1) In a previous assignment, some students wrote (very intelligently) about the subtle ways in which the Olympian gods as presented by Homer and as presented by Hesiod differ. Now we seem to get yet another picture of the Greek gods by Sophocles. How do Homer’s gods differ from those of Sophocles?

I need to write a 1,500 word ppr for tomorrow in the nxt few hrs...then read 100pgs. grrrr.... -_-

    My turn.

1)With a tail wind, a plane took 3 hours to travel 900km. On the return trip against the same wind, the trip took an extra hour. Find the speed of the plane in still air.

Okay, get four apples or four of anything like spoons, toilet seat covers, shot glasses, cows, etc. Anything. Now, two apples (or spoons, toilet seat covers, shot glasses, cows, etc.) and add them to the other two apples (or spoons, toilet seat covers, shot glasses, cows, etc.) and you get four apples (or spoons, toilet seat covers, shot glasses, cows, etc.). Do you follow?

If only I didn't burn last year's math notes.

Didn't your teacher provide you with any formulas related to this?
