This song is a fantastic intro, I've always felt that the full band instrumentals are a lot cooler than the instrumentals that are done almost entirely by Joe or Mike. Guitars 1 and 2 are panned to the left and right and double each other except for the feedback and noise in the intro. Guitar 3 is dead center in the mix and isn't doubled at all. Pretty simple, just watch out for the bent octave in Guitar 1 and 2's parts. To do this, fret the octave and gradually bend both strings at the same time by curling your fingers downward (it's about a half step bend). On the live version, Brad plays Guitar 1 and Mike plays Guitar 3. Since there really isn't a structure to this song, I've used time markers to label at what point in the song the different parts occur.

This song's pretty fun to play, although I think the intro riff bears a little too much of a resemblence to Points of Authority...but I digress. Guitar 1 is a Fender Telecaster, the tone is instantly recognizable. The other 2 guitars are a pretty normal humbucking distorted tone, I'm gonna stick my neck out and say this is one of the songs Brad used a Les Paul on. Guitar 1 only appears in 2 spots, it plays the first part of the intro and the first part of the bridge. A note on the bridge, The <3b> is a pinch harmonic that is bent up about half a step. On the live version, Brad combines Guitars 2 and 3 in the bridge into a bent octave. To do this, he just frets the octave, rakes across the strings with the pick, and pulls his fingers down to bend the strings. The higher note is usually all that sounds on the live version though, and he doesn't always nail the pinch harmonic. I thought about tabbing it the way he plays it live, but it's almost definitely 2 guitars on the album version. Live, Brad plays Guitars 1 and 2 at all times, and Mike plays Guitar 3, with the exception of the bent octave in the bridge being played only by Brad. I'm also not sure if Mike plays the muted strums before the 2nd chorus, but again, it's clearly played by both guitars on the CD.

This song is really more about the strings and keyboards than the guitar. Guitar 1 only appears twice, playing a little 2-note clean part before the first 2 choruses (which is barely audible on the studio version but can be clearly heard live). Guitar 2's part consists of strumming a single octave during the choruses and bridge, and Guitar 3 only appears in the final chorus, playing 4 big, distorted powerchords that provide the song's climax. On the live version, Brad plays Guitars 1 and 2, and Phoenix actually plays Guitar 3 because Mike plays keyboards throughout the entire song. The bassline is provided by the left hand of Mike's keyboard part. This song is actually played half a step down live (Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb tuning), I tabbed it out in Drop D because I think it was recorded that way. It's a lot easier for Guitar 3 to go from the 3rd fret to open strings than it is to go from the 4th fret to the 1st fret. Regardless, if you want to play this like the live version, just tune down half a step and move everything in this tab up by one fret.

Alright, for this song, I had to simplify the main riff to keep it from looking too cluttered. For Guitars 1 and 2, most of their parts are played as diads (chords using 2 strings), but emphasis is usually switched back and forth between the 2 notes. If I were to tab this that way, I would have to put a ton of parenthesis around notes in the majority of the riffs, and the note emphasis is fairly random, so it just would have been a pain to do. Therefore, I've tabbed this the way it's done live, where Mike and Brad just strum the diads normally, without emphasizing either note. It may not be the most "correct" way of tabbing this song, but it was really the only feasible way for me to do it. Just listen to the album and you'll get a pretty good idea on which notes are being emphasized. This song is played a bit differently live, Brad and Mike like to change chords on offbeats sometimes instead of doing everything as straight 8th notes, and during Guitar 1's parts when it plays the 7th fret on the G and B strings, Brad likes to add in the 9th fret on E as well. Guitar 1 plays throughout the song, Guitar 2 is the rhythm guitar during the chorus, and Guitars 3 and 4 come in for the heavy powerchords during the bridge and appear again for the octave part during the outro. I would've tabbed Guitars 3 and 4 as a single guitar, but during the outro, one guitar comes in 4 beats earlier than the other (since one guitar is panned to each side, it's easy to notice), so I had to notate them seperately. One little note on the ending, for Guitar 4, let the last octave ring out, vibrato the notes by shaking the neck of the guitar up and down, and then let off with your fretting hand and slide your fingers down the neck to get that scraping sound.On the live version, Brad plays Guitar 1 for the entire song except for the outro, where he plays Guitar 4. Mike plays Guitar 2 for the choruses and outro, and Guitar 3 (or 4) for the bridge.

This song could very easily have been recorded in Drop D since none of the song requires open strings or harmonics, but it is played a half step down live, and I personally think it makes more sense to play it that way, so I've tabbed it as such. Anyway, a lot of people don't realize just how early in the song the guitar comes in. Guitar 1 enters during the first chorus, softly palm-muting notes on the low Db string, which doubles the bassline an octave higher. This palm-muted guitar continues under the first guitar solo and following chorus. During the outro guitar solo and chorus, there are 2 rhythm guitars that play almost the same thing, except one moves up to a Db5 chord while the other goes down to an F#5, with the exception of one repeat, where they both go down to the F#5. I still wonder if maybe there's more guitar going on at the end of this song than what I hear, but I may just be getting confused because of all the strings that are mixed in. One little thing to pay close attention to, during the chorus after the first guitar solo, Guitar 1 does NOT go back up to the 5th fret at the end of the first line! It seemed weird to me that it only does that in one place the entire song, but I double-checked and that's really how it goes. On the live version, Brad plays Guitar 1 until the first guitar solo, Guitar 2 during the first solo and following chorus, and Guitar 3 from the 2nd solo until the end of the song. Chester plays Guitar 4.

If you're looking at this, you've probably noticed that I've completely redone this tab. Why? Well, after getting my hands on the multitrack files for this song from Guitar Hero, I realized that the album version of this song is played completely differently from how I had it tabbed before! The rhythm guitar parts (Mike's parts) are actually played with 2-note powerchords at all times on the studio version, not just on the bridge like I had in my previous tab. Also, I had the guitar doubling a little mixed up. Guitar 1 is panned to the left, Guitar 2 is dead center, and Guitar 3 is panned to the right. Guitars 1 and 2 double each other at all times, except Guitar 1 plays the muted strums before the choruses but Guitar 2 doesn't. Guitar 2 drops out during the bridge, which is why it sounds quieter. Guitar 4 plays the solo, and Guitar 5 is a heavily distorted guitar that comes in during the last chorus. It's way back in the mix, but it's there (you can hear it clearly on the multitrack files because it's in the track with the vocals/piano, unlike most of the other guitar parts). Also, the feedback fade-in at the very beginning of the song is actually a backwards sample of Guitars 3 and 4. There are some feedback fade-ins before the first two choruses as well, but I haven't tabbed them.

I think this song wins the award for simplest guitar part ever in a Linkin Park song. There's only one guitar, and the entire song consists of 3 notes. The most notable thing about this song is that Phoenix actually plays guitar on it live. Since Mike handles the majority of the vocals on the live version, Brad plays keyboards, so they have Phoenix play guitar, and as is the case with Leave Out All the Rest, the bassline is covered by the left hand of the keyboard part. Phoenix plays this tuned down half a step live (he usually uses one of Mike's guitars when he plays guitar live), but I didn't see any real reason to tab it that way, since Mike said before the album came out that most of the guitars weren't tuned down like they used to be, so it was probably recorded this way. Again, if you want to play it accurately to the live version, tune down half a step and move everything up one fret. Also, since there's only one guitar, I didn't label any of the parts as "Guitar 1" like I would in a tab with multiple guitar parts.

This is one of the Minutes to Midnight songs that's still tuned down half a step. For such a heavy song, this one's actually pretty light on the guitar layering. Guitars 2 and 3 basically double each other the entire time (with a couple exceptions), and Guitar 1 just comes in from time to time with the EBow figure. You don't absolutely NEED an EBow to play Guitar 1's part, there are a couple ways to do it. One is to use some kind of sustain system (for example, a guitar equipped with a Fernandes Sustainer, which Brad uses live on this song), you can use an overdrive pedal on top of your regular distortion to increase your sustain (which is what I do), or you can use a compressor pedal with the sustain knob turned way up. The last 2 options are VERY prone to feedback though, so you'll need to have good muting technique to keep the other strings from vibrating. A note on Guitar 1, since with the EBow, you never pick the string, you're either sliding between every note or doing hammerons/pulloffs, but I haven't notated that just because it makes things look really cluttered. Just start with your index finger on the 5th fret, and use your index and ring fingers to either slide or hammer-on/pulloff between each note (there's a couple good live videos that show how Brad does it). One other note, on all the muted strums (x's) in this song, you'll want to fret a powerchord at the 2nd fret with your index finger, and then lightly rest your middle and ring fingers on the strings to mute the sound. This way, you get the muted notes, but they still have a defined pitch to them (it's basically doing a palm mute but with your fretting hand). On the live version of this track, Brad plays Guitar 1 when it appears, and Guitar 2 when it doesn't. Mike plays Guitar 2, occasionally jumping to Guitar 3 for the muted strums where Guitar 2 isn't playing (Intro Part 3, for example).

If you're looking at this tab and saw it previously, you'll probably notice that the first part of the song has changed. That's because after a proshot live video of this song finally popped up (Lisbon 2008), I found out that Brad plays the clean part on the G, B, and E strings, instead of the D, G, and B like I originally had in my tab. It's a tad harder to play this way, but it is how he does it. Just think of frets 5 through 8 as one finger per fret and you'll get the idea. During the breakdown, Guitar 3 fades in on a C note and starts sliding between notes softly in the background, with a lot of feedback. The first 3 notes are easy enough to make out, but after that there are some more where the feedback completely overpowers the original note, making it impossible to tell what the rest are. Therefore, instead of making things harder on myself, I just omitted the part I wasn't positive on (this part is sampled live anyway). The 7th fret harmonic on Guitar 3 leading into the outro is a continuation of this feedback, with a volume swell. It's probably not actually a harmonic, but the pitch can be played as a harmonic. On the live version, Brad plays Guitar 1 for the first half of the song, Guitar 2 during the bridge (though he doubles the bassline instead of staying on a C like on the album), and Guitar 3 during the outro. Mike plays Guitar 2 during the 2nd chorus, does the little piano part in the bridge, and plays Guitar 4 for the outro. Guitar 1 during the outro is either sampled live or not played at all. Sorry about how long the outro is, Guitar 3 is playing 16th notes so it takes a lot of space just to do two measures worth of text.

This is another song with only one guitar part. This one is obviously tuned a half step down because all the guitar in this song is played via natural harmonics, and the pitch of the harmonics can only be done when tuned down half a step. I've seen some people who don't even think there's guitar in this song, but it's clearly there, especially if you run the song through a vocal remover, the guitar becomes the loudest part. Pretty simple guitar part, don't think anything's done differently by Brad live.

The thing that gives away that this song is tuned down half a step is the last chorus, the rhythm guitar clearly hits an open Db powerchord there. You can do this with 2 guitars, there's only more than that in the last chorus. And all I have to say about the solo is...did you ever think you'd see that many notes that close together in a Linkin Park song? It's an easy solo to tab and fairly easy to play correctly when you slow it down, but the speed at which it's played is what makes it difficult. I might have some of the positionings for this wrong, but I have all the notes correct. Also, Guitars 1 and 2 can be combined easily into one part, I just notated them seperately because Brad obviously tracked the solo seperately from the other guitar tracks. On the live version, Brad plays Guitar 1 until the solo, Guitar 2 for the solo, Guitar 4 for the last chorus, and back to Guitar 1 for the outro. Mike plays Guitar 3 during the solo (the octaves for the backing part), and Guitar 5 during the last chorus. Guitars 1 and 3 are omitted during the last chorus on the live version. Sorry about the alignment of the rhythm part under the solo, it's a straight 8th-note strumming pattern but I had to mess with the spacing to align it with the lead guitar part.

The last song on Minutes to Midnight has to be Linkin Park's magnum opus when it comes to the use of multiple guitar tracks. There's acoustic guitar, 2 rhythm guitars, a seperately tracked solo, and a 3rd rhythm guitar that comes in near the end (There are a few other songs with 5 guitar tracks, but this song has the most variation between parts). The overall tone of the guitars on this track suggests that they were all recorded on a Fender Stratocaster (or possibly a Jaguar as Brad had one of those in the studio as well), so you're going to want a light distortion/overdrive for guitars 2, 3, and 4, and to get the right tone, try playing this song on a guitar with single coil pickups. This song is also played much differently live: Mike plays the acoustic part at the beginning, then plays Guitar 3's part for the 2nd pre-chorus and chorus (on the acoustic guitar instead of an electric), then switches to basically playing Guitar 5 (on an electric guitar) for the rest of the song. Brad plays the Guitar 2 and 4 parts (2 for the first half of the song, 4 for the second). Mike's rhythm parts at the end are quite dumbed-down from how they were played on the album version. This tab is for the album version, I'll make a live version tab sooner or later seeing as it's substantially different from the album version. Also, I tried to notate the solo the way Brad plays it live, and he plays the entire first part of the solo on the G string. I personally find it easier to play it on the G and B strings and not having to slide around so much, but this is the way he plays it, play it as you see fit.
