The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of getting either With Teeth or Year Zero, but also The Downward Spiral is considered by most people to be a classic and one of their best.

Isn't that a bonus disc that came with the limited edition of And All That Could Have Been? That's not a studio album so I didn't include that.

    In before Zak :p

And I love The Downwards Spiral and Pretty Hate Machine...I went for the latter but I might like the former more, it is so hard to decide.

My vote goes to The Fragile.

And I still think With Teeth is a great album in spite a lot of people dissing it. :)

It's a studio album. It does include new songs, y'know.

As for me, I pick Year Zero. Oh my.

I'll put in my vote after I hear The Fragile (and maybe find it for cheaper than 34 bucks).

I'll be honest. I used to think that NIN were crap but lately I've been getting into them more and more. I've been listening to songs here and there like Survivalism, Wish, The Hand That Feeds, Hurt etc. so maybe it's time I started hearing some albums. Which ones would people strongly recommend?

Pretty Hate Machine sounds pretty dated. It sounds nothing like the later albums they'd make. The Downward Spiral is considered their masterpiece, and The Fragile is considered their "fan favorite" album. Broken is a hard rock EP, and With Teeth sucks. I'm sure you know about Year Zero, but if not, it's their new album which sounds like a video game from hell.

So, basically, avoid PHM and WT, and enjoy everything else.

Yeah the other day I was listening to the full Year Zero on their myspace (this was two days ago, now they only have 4 tracks playable. aren't like tracks 10-16 mostly just instrumentals? I remember the album being full of instrumentals, but I dunno, I could grow to like them.

yeah that's basically exactly like my situation too. I'm also looking in to buying Beside You in Time, that looks pretty sick in HD. I love that trailer #2 on halo22.nin.com, (the little preview image in the web of trailers is the one with the silhouette of the guy with the red background), where they're playing Closer and there's that awesome keyboard solo. I so wish I could jump on my keyboard like that without having the keys break. here's the link:

Don't avoid PHM. I would say, try PHM and The Downward Spiral.

Don't avoid With Teeth, either. It might not be as good as Year Zero or the earlier stuff, but it's still pretty solid in its own right.

No, only 2 tracks are instrumental if memory serves.

    TDS and The Fragile FTW.

i would pick up the downward spiral first and then either with teeth or the fragile. i wouldnt pick up pretty hate machine unless you're flat out in love with the other albums and you just have to have some more nin. year zero is my favorite but i still suggest picking up downward spiral first. im sure it will take a few listens to sink in but its a really good album.

well right now I'm leaning towards The Downward Spiral [DualDisc] (I don't have a SACD player, so goodbye bonus tracks). If I like it (or even if I don't, lol), the next purchase would be between The Fragile and With Teeth. thanks for all your input guys.
