To me, LITE should've been the first single. Its seems like it has more energy than burn it down. Its more epic live than burn it down. It seems like it would please fans on both sides of the spectrum and generate more sales. Maybe I just love LITE but I think it would've been a much better leadoff single. Thoughts?

Yup. Coupled with a badass music video it would've knocked everybody's socks off.

Whenever my mp3 player busted out 'Lost In The Echo' during a ride, my friends/cousins/colleagues would always be surprised. 'Lost In The Echo' gets a bad rep here and there on the board it seems, but as I have mentioned once before, the track is the perfect ode to their earlier musical prowess.

I think most of us think that LITE is a better song than BID but seriously, LITE would have failed as a commercial single. BID did well in charts, especially in Europe. I mean if mainstream radio station wanted to play LITE, they would have. Obviously there's just not enough hit potential.

LITE would've appealed to the LP fans whilst BID appealed to the non-LP, mainstream, people.

I'm not some marketing type of a guy to know if LITE would sell better than BID but I know that it's my least favorite song off Living Things, and thus far the worst imo. The whole song sounds forced and fake to me.

No. BURN IT DOWN was the perfect high energy radio song that easily hit mainstream as it was meant to.

LOST IN THE ECHO would have done well, but wouldn't have caught the attention that BID did. It's a bit heavier and less pop.

No. LITE sounds like LP trying to be LP whereas BID, while not my favorite song, is just LP.

No, but LP could've made a better music video for it.

No. Linkin Park fans probably enjoy LITE more, but the purpose of a lead single is to promote the band to everybody. Burn It Down was a great first single.

LITE would have done better, absolutely. People on LPA seem to have the strangest opinions and theories on what "the mainstream" likes and what will succeed and fail, but LITE would have done better on every front besides car commercials. Burn It Down needed to grow on the majority of people I've seen, Lost in the Echo is considered quality by even non-fans of Linkin Park.

Especially considering the band just coming out of the "You guys wouldn't know how to be a rock group anymore" stigma post-ATS, Lost would have remedied that in the way Burn It Down didn't.

    This. This. This. This. THIS.

The "mainstream" crowd that liked Burn It Down most likely already liked What I've Done/New Divide and are either more "core" fans that have bought the band's recent albums OR are just "singles fans". Lost in the Echo would be for the crowd that despised A Thousand Suns (and to a smaller extent, Minute to Midnight for it's "softness") who would suddenly reconnect with the band's heavier sound.

"Burn It Down" and "Echo" were both great choices for singles but, yeah, I do think that "Echo" might have done better for the band as a lead single, perhaps aided with some solid promotion and a decent performance-centric video to boot. "Burn It Down" would have probably done okay as a second single as well.

As much as I love LITE I must agree that BID was a better first single. The climate of music in general is very geared towards that four-on-the-floor dance type of feel on the radio. I feel like hardcore fans would love LITE but people honestly love BID outside of the hardcore fanbase (just like they love New Divide).

Case in point: BID is STILL played on numerous radio stations CONSISTENTLY here. No other single has really off LT has had such a strong showing. You can come with conspiracy theories and label blame but people do like BID a lot.

I don't believe most fans are partial to their first singles. It's supposed to have the widest appeal which usually means it ends up not connecting as strongly with hardcore fans.

From a commercial point of view, LITE would have been a better single. But LITE as the lead single would have misled the fans into believing that the "old" LP was back. What I'm trying to say is, LITE doesn't sum up Living Things, BID does a slightly better job at that.

i strongly disagree because in my opinion LITE is the best song in the album. one thing i can't stand is when the first single is the best song and out of a whole album. so BID was a great first single. if i had to pick what to be a first single i would go with COG.

I think that it's LP's style to have a "low powered" song as the first single. Burn it Down, The Catalyst, What I've Done and Somewhere I Belong all are sort of low and mellow compared to the second singles which have more "pump" in them. Again LITE, Waiting for the End, Bleed it out and Faint; all have that "awesome pump" which make a person go "whoa".

I think the band knows the same too. However in the Meeting of ATOS, Mike wanted to have a song that talked about the album, rather than having a "radio-centric" one. I think Burn it Down, The Catalyst, What I've Done and Somewhere I Belong do that job really well.

EDIT: I do agree with Star Screem's opinion on having COG as the first single.
