Not really, it just uses that as a small backstory, as with tons of other alien sightings; almost nothing between the two are similar. This is just another alien invasion movie.
Should be a good movie. I'll reserve judgement though. The last alien movie I saw, District 9, I had high hopes for, but I ended up not liking it.
