Greatest Hits albums have been an important part of the music industry for decades. They have often been seen as good entry points for certain artists, and are some of the best selling albums of all time (Eagles, Billy Joel). They have been seen throughout the album era as a good way to consolidate an artists “best” work (most popular) into one unit so more people can buy and hear it. However, with the prominence of streaming it has become relatively easy to access any amount of songs (hits or not) and consolidate them into a playlist (your own sort of “greatest hits” compilation). I don’t think there would be any real reason now for artists to release greatest hits albums, as it would just be flooding the streaming services with multiple versions of the same song.
