I, too would go with Oasis. They perfected the Brit-Pop Sound and wrote Hymns for Millions. Plus, now the`ve split up they`ve reached legendary Status, and this only because of one Album: (Whats the Story) Morning Glory. October 2nd was the 15th Anniversary of it and I still hear it almost once a week or so, due to its status.

Oasis were an awfully overrated band. Not good enough to be compared to a legenary band like The Beatles. They tried to be the Beatles of their generation and failed miserably. Their first 2 records have some good stuff, the rest (mostly) are really bad. They were good at what they did and Noel had some talent, but by no means was their music original. And not to mention how many times they ripped off famous riffs from other bands. They were okay, but not great. Don't get me wrong, I do listen to their first two albums and enjoy them to some extent, but there's no way I would compare Oasis to one of the best bands of all time.

I would love to listen to more Oasis, just to get an idea of what the people who nominate them are saying.

I did this thread on a Dream Theater forum once and I got some other interesting candidates, the most touted among them being U2. Michael Jackson was also mentioned, but again, I feel like his period was more 80s/90s.

Saying this as someone who likes Oasis, I don't think they're on a par with The Beatles in any way.

Well, to be serious, basically I agree. Nirvana were a tad overrated as a band, but Cobain as a musician and artist wasn't. He deserved the praise he got and still gets, but Nirvana were a bit overhyped. Cobain's death contributed to them getting overhyped by the fans and media of course, but anyway :)

As for Radiohead, I think some people refer to them as the Pink Floyd of this generation.

I’m actually confused of what you’re trying to say. lol. Are you asking what bands in our generation today that could actually equate The Beatles? Well, Musically, there are lots of bands out there who are doing experimentation to their music and could possibly equate The Beatles but if you’re talking about fame this is probably where most bands of today fail because comparing to The Beatles it should at least 70% of the whole population in the world knows the band you're referring to.\

    So, my answer is NONE.

To me the closest answer is Linkin Park. Primarily because the Beatles were the most popular band at that time and LP is the most popular band in the world as of now. Another valid answer would be U2.

As much as people will probably hate on us for this, you're right.

I disagree with U2 though, purely because they've never pushed any musical boundaries.

No band will ever have the impact that The Beatles had. The Beatles made music cool. It got people hooked on music. They reformed the entire world basically. No band can recreate that.

If we're talking musically, there are plenty of bands that are better than The Beatles. But compared to how good they were for their time, they were and will always be the greatest. If the exact same band came around today they wouldn't even be looked at. Music has evolved because of them, making their sounds obsolete. We need more innovators in the music world today.

Well yeah, of course technically speaking almost all bands today are better than the Beatles. When I say musically, I meant in terms of pushing the compositional envelope. For example, Martha My Dear may be the simplest song in the world to play. But were any contemporary rock bands writing songs that were such a drastic departure from pop and/or rock formats? Hardly.

I agree with Ben, without bias Linkin Park could be the next generation of The Beatles. Think about it: The Beatles started off on a safe genre, then suddenly expanded their style, pushed boundaries, and still managed to be the biggest band in the world around their time while making music THEY wanted to do. Linkin Park started off on whatever their early genre was (I refuse to call it nu-metal :p), then suddenly just like The Beatles, expanded their style, pushed MANY boundaries, and are STILL the biggest band today while again making music THEY wanted to do. The Beatles had SOME haters, where as half the universe is very critical against LP though. Of course, thankfully, they're not hated up to the point of Nickelback and Creed (if they stuck with HT/M the rest of their career, then yeah they would IMO). That's why I absolutely love this band to death: They're themselves.

Although Chester and Mike are certainly not Paul and John, I'm perfectly happy with just Chester and Mike being themselves. Brad and Dave aren't George, they're just Brad and Dave. Rob =/= Ringo, Rob = Rob. And Joe really...is just Mr. Joseph Hahn. But just like The Beatles in which all the guys are legendary for being Paul, John, Ringo, and George, Linkin Park is already legendary with Chester, Mike, and Joe, and Brad, Dave, and Rob will get there.

No it's the other way round, Kurt Cobain is overrated - Nirvana by name is on the same level as any iconic punk band nowadays. Most of the people who idolise Kurt Cobain don't even listen to Nirvana.

No band at the moment matches the popularity of The Beatles, and no popular band at the moment will ever (unless someone does something drastic) influence the amount of music that The Beatles have influenced.

Why do you think Cobain is overrated?

@Harlz, I think U2 pushed the musical boundaries with Achtung Baby. Problem with U2 is their inconsistency. Whilst they were a glorious band in the 80's and Achtung Baby is their masterpiece, they have been on the wane ever since they released that album. None of their recent albums matches the great music they once made.

So does that mean he's going to become a heroin addict and kill himself or get murdered by a bitch of a wife, depending on what you believe?

Why doesn't the LPA have a like button?

    ----

The Beatles were more than a popular band, they were a fashion icon and to this day we can relate to their music. I don't think you can have anything like the Beatles in comparison as yet, but I hate to think that in the coming years the Jonas Brothers may snatch the title.
