I noticed a common thing that people seem to dislike about One More Light is the use of high-pitched vocal chops and samples (which is known as the "chipmunks" here). I personally think they sound great in songs like Nobody Can Save Me and Sorry For Now! Think of this way. It's Linkin Park's way of replacing turntable scratches. Most of the spots where those vocal chops are placed could have easily been replaced by scratching but let's be honest. It's 2017. Sorry Joe. But what are your thoughts? Do you love them? Hate them? Would you rather have scratching again? Discuss. And i'll say it again, what did Alvin ever do to you?
I've always liked vocal sample stabs so I got no issues. EDIT: now that I think about it, vocal drops are actually an easy shortcut to get me to like a song
I love sampling and vocals chops, they always make the songs stand out imo. and the SFN drop in one of the highlights on OML.
I don't mind them. It's actually quite annoying that people keep referring them to as chipmunks. Fun fact, according to Chester on Twitter, the intro to Battle Symphony is a vocal and not a sample/synth. I would have never guessed.
I don't mind them, except if it's used to completely replace a chorus a la Kiiara's music. That's why I consider "Heavy" miles above Kiiara's material because a lot of her stuff is great material but it's really weird since there's no chorus. It's a lot more awkward live, especially since Kiiara's visibly nervous live, doesn't have a lot of command presence and relies a lot on playback.
She's a lot better now than she was when she first began promoting "low kii savage", in terms of stage presence and connecting with her audience. She still has some way to go, IMO, but she'll improve as she gains more touring and performing experience.
That's good to hear, especially since she's kinda nervous even online. She gets flak for just standing around when "Gold"'s chorus plays since it's mostly a loop of vocals, as well as retaining Chester's vocals on "Heavy" despite being a more manageable song to sing but I do hopefully she grows, as she's a very new presence on music. On Twitter, she's visibly nervous and insecure (yup, definitely someone who grew up with Linkin Park ) since she has issues with her labels/higher-ups (she had a deleted rant recently about her music being kept from being released and paying her own tour bus) and often tweets (a lot) to Linkin Park for assurance and/or to lighten her mood. I dunno. Anyway, back on topic, I like how "Sorry for Now" uses the vocal samples after the chorus, but I hope they don't end up doing something like this, where Patrick Stump literally sings the entire looped chorus
I hate them and if they could've easily replaced them with scratching I wish they did. Also I don't mind chopped vocals one bit in fact since the one on BS is not pitchshifted it sounds quite cool. The thing that makes them bad for me is actually the use of pitchshifting. Ever since it became a thing I hated it.
Ehh, it's just that they could have used vastly better alternatives. Look at "The Requiem" for example. When ATS came out we all thought that was a female singer on "god bless us everyone.." but it was just Mike with a crazy pitch shifted vocal effect. I'd much rather have that than what we got on OML.
Ya know, that's actually a fair point. I'd be interested to see them implement it more like that. I'm just more annoyed that people call it "chipmunk voices."
I understand the term "chipmunks" for Good Goodbye's high-pitched vocals. In fact, that's how I'd describe them myself. But good god I have no fucking idea how everyone is calling the other vocal samples on the album chipmunks as well. I do agree however that there were much better sample options available in the realm of pop/alternative music.
OMG this FOB video. This is just as awful as awesome it was in the studio version. What were they thinking? They should have just played the recorded version.
