I have a friend that I used to have a crush on. The other day, I found out that she was pregnant, and I wrote a song based loosely on that. “Welcome to the World” I remember when we used to be so innocent Never giving any moment a second thought at all We’d have our fun and be on our way Reminding ourselves that there was a tomorrow The world rears its ugly head with broken promises And doesn’t help us up after we fall Suddenly things are grower darker every day Our lives begin to saturate with constant sorrow Then we look back on all the time spent Holding on to the ones we used to call But now there’s nothing more that we can say Since we’re just living on time borrowed Welcome to existence Welcome to your life Welcome to the world You don’t seem prepared anymore We used to complain about the simple things Like school and homework, our teachers and rules Then we’d head out to a friend’s for the weekend Leaving mom and dad alone at home But when reality hits us, it sort of stings And reminds us what life is, that we’re fools The fallout brings us all home again Because we were never meant to be alone And in the darkness we start to sing About swimming with our friends down at the pool Soon thereafter we find that our friends Have all subtly changed their tones Welcome to existence Welcome to your life Welcome to the world You don’t seem prepared anymore And when you told your parents the news They broke your spirit, put you down You thought they’d take it so much better than this Until your dad started to yell All you could hear was the sound of shoes As your dad started to kick things around When all you wanted was a simple kiss To get you through this hell You’re unprepared, you’re about to lose Your whole life was just waiting to be found Now you’re alone, sitting with closed fists You threw it away with no one to tell Welcome to existence Welcome to your life Welcome to the world You don’t seem prepared anymore No, you don’t seem prepared anymore You don’t seem so prepared anymore No, you don’t seem prepared
