I'm sure everyone has experienced this at one time or another... Have you ever been writing or typing and you stop and stare at a word you know you spelled correctly but it just looks weird? Yeah, well that's what this thread is for. Here in this sanctuary feel free to discuss whatever language you speak and the weird words that are part of it. For example: Awry- Why in the world is it spelled the way it is? A-w-r-y... Who sat down, listened to the word, and sharted those letters down on paper? I typed it in an essay today, sat there for 10 minutes staring at it, and felt really weird and uncomfortable. Aa- WTF? Apparently it's a kind of lava? Some other ones that mess with me are receive, laugh, and liaison. It's so weird how these are the accepted spellings of these words...
I think it's weird that the word "abbreviate" and all its related constructions are so long compared to what the word means which is essentially "to shorten" or "reduce."
I spent ten minutes looking at the word "color" today. It seemed so fucking off. I decided I'll use "colour" from now on.
You guys are just confirming what I kept saying before – that the English language is just plain fucking weird.
I remember as a kid I heard my brother say "kinky" and I refused to believe it was a real word. Until this day it still sounds weird to me.
The words "commend" and "condemn" are very similar despite their meanings being the exactly opposite of each other, and this used to give me problems as a non-native speaker.
The problem's that English is an amalgamation of a billion different languages and grammar rules that evolved over time into the clusterfucked shitstorm that it is these days. And shorthand isn't helping matters any.
