    Hey,

So, I've been thinking a lot about my weight. I checked my BMI today and I noticed that I'm overweight. I'm 5'8 and I weigh about 185 pounds, meaning I have a BMI of 28.1. In order to go below 24.9 (which means you weigh normal for your size), I need to lose about 25 pounds. By the end of this month, I want to have lost those 25 pounds, but I'm not sure how. I don't think it's possible health-wise to do so. It would mean that I have to lose 6 pounds a week, and that's 4 pounds more than what is recommended per week.

And even if I don't manage by the end of this month, I really want to try and lose some weight. I'm not sure how I'm going to manage it, which is why I need help. If there are any of you who've managed to lose such weight, how did you do it?

What's a healthy way to lose that amount of weight in a decent amount of time?

    Thanks,
    Louis

First of all, 25 pounds in 1 month = no no.

If you eat lots of vegetables, fruit and fibres, do some sports and stay away from high calorie things, you could lose about 3 pounds per week the first few weeks. Later on your body will get used to it and the weightloss process will go slower, but that's a good sign because it means you're almost on your perfect weight.

I'm losing weight right now as well, and instead of taking some chocolate or chips, I eat all kinds of fruit, mostly fruit salads since that's less boring. Or if I feel like eating alot with lunchtime, I just make myself a large healthy sandwich (salad, tomatoes, cucumber, light ham etc.). So you see, losing weight isn't bad, you just have to make it nice for yourself.

    Good luck. :)

edit: Oh and also, drink water! Only water, water, water. 2 Litres per day.

Hey Louis, first of, how active sport-wise are you?

Also, you won't be able to lose 25 pounds in one month, I had to convert that into stone which is 1.8, and you would be crazy for trying to lose that much in one month.

I can't really help you with your nutrition, apart from if you eat meat like chicken after sports it's very good for you and like Marj said, only drink water, no more pop lol
But what I can help you with is your fitness. I go to the gym on average 4 times a week, I also have a smaller gym at home (treadmill, weights, punch bag). So if you need a workout routine, I can help you with that, if not, you should work out or do some sort of physical pursuit (;)) at least once every 48 hours.

Anyway, good luck mate, if you need any help don't hesitate to ask.

The best thing to do if you're new to the whole thing is start out simple. Like Dean said, just do some walking or running. Cardiovascular exercise is the best way to trim ze waistline. And clean up your diet like Marj suggested. Try to stay away from shitty processed foods and eat more fruits, veggies, and lean meat.

    Good luck. :)

If you get the bus or a car ride to school for instance, try walking isntead provided it isn't too far and you have the time. I have two walks on the way to college and two on the home with a train ride in between each, and that adds up to about an hour of walking a day. If you have access to a bike and can ride one you could try that as well.

Just jogging. Run like crazy every day. More and more and more and in a 3-4 months you won't recognize yourself.

So, I've been looking up some stuff, and I've been looking at what you guys have said, and I think I've got a plan for what I'm doing. I'm gonna type it up right here, and for those of you who bother to read it, let me know if there's anything I should adjust.

During the rest of this month:

    Regarding Food:
    - 6-8 cups of water each day
    - For each and every meal, only eat small portions. Don't worry about eating the entire thing.
    - No breads (with the exception of a piece of toast with cheese in the morning)
    - No soda
    - Avoid ice cream and sweets

    Regarding Exercise:
    - Go to the gym everyday
    - 30 minutes of walking / running on the treadmill
    - 15 minutes of weightlifting
    - Go to the beach, play beach tennis and swim for a while in the ocean
    - Take a walk every few evenings (if time allows)
    - Find a way to play some sports (basketball, soccer, etc.)

I'm in Cyprus right now so that's all I'm particularly capable of doing. When I get back to Arizona however:

    Weekdays:

    Regarding Food:
    - Breakfast: Two eggs or 1 cup of cheerios with 2% milk
    - Lunch: Either a salad, a soup, or a sandwich, with fruit.
    - Dinner: Whatever is cooked by my mom, but in small portion.
    - Snacks: Chex Mix, Fruit
    - No sodas
    - No breads (maybe toast in the morning)
    - 8 cups of water each day
    - Small portions with food

    Regarding Exercising:

    - Morning: Marching Band rehearsals (6:00-7:10 AM)
    - Afternoon: Basketball with friend
    - Evening: (Mon) Marching Rehearsals 6-9 PM, (Tue) 30 minute walk or 30 minute swimming (Wed) Same as Tuesday (Thursday) Same as Tuesday (Friday) Marching at Varsity Football games

    Weekends:

    Regarding Food:

    Same as before

    Regarding Exercising:

    - Morning: YMCA - half an hour on the treadmill, and hour and a half just playing some basketball
    - Afternoon: 30 minute walk or swim
    - Evening: Nothing

    Other:

-Each day, 50 sit-ups and 50 push-ups each morning and each evening.

    -------------------------------

So that's my plan. I'm gonna work to be pretty good about. Think it's good, or is there anything I need to adjust?

Thanks for everyone who has responded so far. The advice is very helpful. :)

You have to eat bread, pasta or potatoes everyday. You need your carbs, it's a great source of energy. If you eat bread, eat brown bread, not white, brown bread fills better and is healthier. Boiled potatoes are healthier than baked ones.

But the rest looks good. :)

Carbs are alright as long as you don't go overboard with it. The real key to weight loss is protein. Chicken, turkey, lean red meat, egg whites, nuts, etc.
    All good sources of protein.

And when you do eat carbs, remember to eat brown carbs instead of white ones like Marj said. Take wheat bread instead of white bread, brown rice instead of white rice... something like that.

    a few things:

make it at least 15, because you know, it's summer :)

make it at least half an hour if you don't have time for more

    - if you run you don't need any extra walking in the evening

    - eat fish instead of meat if you can at least 2-3 days a week

Workout, eat right and do things.

Workout? Go biking, or swimming, It's summer, it's hot and the ladies are about. About over the belt? Do laps at the pool, something strenuous workout. Biking is a good way to keep cool as you can bike up and down hill, you'll not believe how far you can go on a bike in about an hour! Go walk more often, or something sports. Go do an activity for about an hour or two, and take a break, and go again. ( like bike in the morening, swim in the evening ) So say you wake up at 9am, go workout till 10am, or 11am. then workout again at like..idk, 5? till 7 then eat dinner and shower.

Getting thirsty? Stay away from energy drinks, Alcohol, Sugar drinks, and drink mostly water. If you workout for over an hour ( And Non-stop that is ) then it's okay to drink powerade or gatorade. But if not, then water is best. So drink TONS more water, time to drop those sugar lased calorie drinks. don't drink protien drinks too, they dont help  Eat actual food. AND NO MORE SODA! ( Hard to keep that one, until you actually run or bike that 240 calorie soda off!)

For snacks, have an apple, or an orange, not a big one. Don't eat too many bananas, and dont eat them before you workout, they expand when digesting. Don't big meals or big foods 1 or 2 hours before you workout. Wait until your done working out, and then eat. Or sleep than eat. Stay away from alot of oily food and fillers, eat bread, pasta, cereal, grains, ect. Carbohydrates to keep your body in store for energy. Dont eat too much sugary food, if its too sweet, its got too much sugar in it most likely. Fruits and veggies are a plenty. For meat, eat more fish, because you are what you eat, right? And what do fish do? Swim. They even swim upriver, when their asleep, their constantly moving, so eatting fish is really good for you ( I forgot what kind though)

Get a good nights rest. Studies ( Insert link that I lost ) show that sleeping well, and sleeping before 1am, and waking up early is actually good for you, because the longer you stay up, your hormones build resistance to burning fat, because it's worried that it'll need that fat for an emergency. So sleep earlier, and sleep longer. Go bed at 11 or 10, wake up at 7, or 8, and there you go.

Egg's and shrimp are good for you, but don't over do it on them. Eatting an egg a day ( hardboiled, and yes, eat the yellow part) Is healthy for you, but more than one or two is a waste and adds fat.)

Okay, so everyone got it there, Lets look at your plan.

Water: 15? spread it out, and keep drinking water even if more is needed. Remember, the more yellow your piss is, the more dehydrated you are.

Small portions? Made it Medium portions, Don't gorge yourself with food, just eat until your barely full, dont be bloated. Don't overdue yourself on bread, three slices a day is sufficent.

Treadmill. 5 minutes walking, 5 minutes speed walking, the rest should be running. Weightlifting: half hour, as said before, and dont push yourself too hard. Work on a weight you can do and keep doing that. ONce it feels that it's beginning to feel easy or light, add the next weight on it. ( 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 ect )

Swim :) it'll be cool in the water.

    When your back:

An egg with 1% or fat free milk, hardboiled egg.
Lunch: Sandwhich, and soup OR fruit.
    Snacks: Fruit, or yogurt.
No sweet drinks, plain ol' water. maybe 10-12 cups, really.
Marching band ect, is good :) when you have a chance, go swim, you'll already be walking often.
Other: do however many you can do sit-ups and push-ups. Add one every day So if you can easily do 50, tomarrow, do 51, then 52, then 53...and so on so-fourth.

Make sure that if you eat vitamin <capsules, pills, chewy flavorful stuff> that you eat something with it, and espcially Omega-3, and a few other things. Again and importantly, Some Fish are really good for you to eat, i think samon or deep sea fish. Don't go crazy on nuts but have a few, a handful is enough. Yeah, brown bread over white bread ect. Rye or wheat ;D

Should take you about 2-3 month total, Thats my Guess.

Whenever I diet, I do basics. I always excercise, with ballet and whatnot. 6 and a half hours of strenuous ballet training a week plus the 3.5 hours that I assist teaching. But for eating, for breakfast I'll eat one egg with a slice of toast or an apple, or 2 eggs. For lunch, half a turkey sandwich with lettuce and cheese, usually, with milk. And for dinner, whatever mom makes but minus the potatoes and a smaller portion. Just enough to make me not hungry. With potatoes, some carbs are good, but it's more of a tease that I think makes it harder to stay on the diet if you eat potatoes. I just avoid them all together. I don't snack in between. Maybe some fruit. Coffee is a must in the morning, but no sugar.

This works really well for me. In 2 days I see my stomach flattening out. I mean, depending on how much you normally eat this would be a huge shock to your system which is bad, but for me it works.

The key for me is to never be full. I eat just enough that I'm not hungry, just barely satisfied.

    Good luck. :)
