I find it absolutely crazy people are mocking Chester's performance and calling him out of tune. In case you guys weren't aware from listening to the song, or the performance live...Chester has to scream this song the entire way through. Never once during the song (except when he sings 'lift me up/let me go' softly before the outro) does he get a break during this song. Despite not having a metal sound, this is one of the most vocally intense songs Chester has had to sing on any album, and of course he's going to sound strained after screaming for 3 minutes straight. Imagine how hard it's going to be for him when they do the WHOLE song live.

The Catalyst is not an easy song to sing by any means and I think Chester did very well considering the difficulty of the song.

Ah, well, I'm not mocking. :" He still sounds f**king great, IMO. Linkin Park were pretty much in top form for that performance. :)

if you're talking about their clothing:
    [ random]
Dave looked good, he now wears "tighter" jeans around the legs, no more those wide jeans
    Brad looked good
    Joe looked good
    Rob...looked good
chester wore his G-star jacket from Sonisphere and sunglasses, I dont like these boots but anyway he looked good
Mike HAD A HAIRCUT, liked it longer better oh and looked good.

They all have the similar good looking rock band style... [ /random]

about the singing: they all did a great job and its nice to hear Joe, because I believe he's a good singer (See Tesla Park LPTV). Dont judge the performance by a crappy MTV video, those people who went to the show said it sounded really good and I believe pooch did a good job too.

Yahoo music wasnt to impressed with the band I see...

"Rock: still in hibernation. Is there such a thing as a major rock & roll band now? If so, it wasn't represented on the VMAs. Linkin Park's appearance seemed impressive, at least until viewers figured out that it was the Griffith Observatory setting that was impressive. But their now rap-less NIN/U2 hybrid sound didn't exactly make them rebels without a cause. If there was a rock band you'll remember from the evening, unfortunately, it may be the group in that annoying credit-check commercial."

This is the HQ version of the performance if you want to watch it offline. Believe me, this version is good enough for all of you. This video has better quality than most of version available now on Youtube.

I mostly agree with this assessment. There are a few other things that may have made him sound a little "off" at the performance, like the vocal effects being turned up a little too high. Since it is the first performance of the song, it would have been very difficult to get everything set just right for the broadcast mix. The mix itself probably wasn't perfect, either. Most TV live performances sound a little off anyways, imo, especially when it's an outdoor performance. They only broadcast the first song, so there wasn't much chance to make sure it was going out sounding just right. I'm sure it sounded much better at the concert, and any mixing issues will be fixed after they study the performance and make adjustments.

    5 vocalists FTW

Saw it last night. It was great! Too bad they butchered the song, but I liked it. Brad was more prominent than in the studio version and the vocals by all the bound sounded great.
