Adam Jones just posted this on his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152700525247151
Well, Tool working on new stuff isn't exactly new news. They've posted about a few times over the past couple of months on their Facebook. I'm pretty sure they've completed at least one song so far. Given that they've been working on the new album for a while, I don't expect to see the new LP drop until spring of 2016 at the very earliest. Might as well release it on the 10th anniversary of 10,000 Days.
I know they've been writing since 2008/09, - The big news here is the fact they're in a professional studio. Tool don't hit the studio until they're done writing (which they do at their "Loft" rehearsal space), so that they don't waste any time/money. Carey explained it a year or two ago, broke down roughly how long each of them takes to record (with Danny himself nailing down his parts in less than a week, dudes a beast) and it came out to about 3 months or less altogether. First sign of movement was in October when Jones posted pictures on his instagram of infamous Whiteboard and another of the whole band at The Loft with the hashtags #smokeonthehorizon Their webmaster, Blair hinted that things were complete a couple of weeks ago, and last week again hinted something was happened on Tuesday involving the band, then we get this video. Unless this is some cruel prank on Adams part (he posted it on his on facebook page knowing exactly how people would take it), they've started recording, meaning they've finished writing, meaning we'll probably have the album by September/October. They've been wrapped up in multiple lawsuits for most of the past decade, which severely impeded their writing. This is a good round up: http://trademarknerd.com/spiraling-out-through-tools-lawsuits/#.VOC0SC5IPIV Both suits have apparently been settled, with the last one finishing last month. It's no coincidence that we're now seeing serious movement on the album.
This is awesome Live from '94. Sober, 4 Degrees, Intolerance, Prison Sex.
They need to hurry up and release new music. It's been almost a decade...I was still in school and oblivious to the crushing weight of reality back then.

Why weren't they making music together for the last 9 years? Were they not sure if they could release music ever again with those group of guys? I don't know the details of the lawsuit. Even if it prevented them from releasing music until the lawsuit was over, they could have like 2 or 3 album's worth of material by now ready for future release.
The details of the lawsuit are here: http://trademarknerd.com/spiraling-out-through-tools-lawsuits/#.VQcvVOFIPIW It didn't stop them from doing anything, legally at least, and they were writing this whole time, or trying to, but as Adam Jones keeps saying, the lawsuits interfered with their creativity. Writer's block, basically. Combine that with the news that one of them had a severe health scare at some point (My guess is Justin, clearly wasn't MJK, nor Adam from the way he speaks, & Danny's been quite active. Justin though, as Pidgeon pointed above, has aged heavily over the last few years, despite being 43 & the youngest by a good 8 or 9 years), that's why it's taken so long. Looks like both legal & health issues are cleared now though & their back on track and nearing the finish line. From the last Newsletter a few weeks ago: http://www.toolband.com/news/index.html Also, from a couple of weeks before that, RE: Adam in the video with the Motorhead guys: So, 1. MJK has properly joined the fray (which is the last part, & he notoriously works fast), and 2. there's another project that they "recorded sometime ago" that was being mixed last month, so will probably be released this year (speculation is it's a live album or another Salival type release).
So this new album is finally happening. They mixed & mastered from January through to March. In February MJK gave a tentative release window of "mid-May to mid-July". At this point May is out, late-June/July is still in. They start touring this Sunday (May 5th), and have strongly indicated they'll be playing new material. So looks like new Tool in 2 days, fingers crossed they put out a full song online so it's not just shitty fan-cam footage. Here's the jam they've been playing live over the last few years, "Descending", which is apparently a part of a big 10-15 minute song:
And not a moment too soon. I'm thirty one years old and their last album came out my junior year of high school. Haha!
