This is slightly old news but I've just stumbled across it and it has me more excited for this game than ever. Reading the full article reveals the following information about what to expect of the new engine and approach to the Tomb Raider series: Playing Prince Of Persia, I always thought it'd be great if Tomb Raider was as free roaming and agile as POP and now it seems like my wishes are coming true. Crystal Dynamics have been making some serious progress on this game, and with Toby Gard officially back on board and all this dedication going into it, I cant help but feel like this will be one terrific game. I had lost hope in the series after the games didn't seem to feel much different as time went on, but I'll have to admit I'll be the first to wait for E3 when the first playable demo of this game is revealed. They're thinking it could be released around June of 2005. It's only been a year and a half that the game has been in production but then again Prince Of Persia came out last year and a new sequel is already near completion, so I don't know. What do you all think?
I can only hope for the best for this game, I'll make my final judgement when i'm able to play a demo of it.
the tomb raider series.. what a joke.. seriously.. the only reason this garbage still sells is because middle aged men get off on a computer generated character.. there is no reason for anyone to get excited about the latest tomb raider game.. each game is worse than previous title in this sad line of games.. everytime one is being made, its over hyped and when released ends up being another bad game. yes, i have played the tomb raider games, and i do know what i am talking about. play a real 3rd person action/adventure/non-p.o.s. that just takes up space on the shelves..
However, Tomb Raider paved the way for female-driven games where there is a female dominance. Before, female characters were supporting roles or the one you had to save (i.e. Mario/Donkey Kong). Lara Croft is definately known for her figure, however that is also a marketing tool. Yes, the Tomb Raider games have been frustrating in the past, but no matter how much you can deny it, Tomb Raider plays a large, large part in gaming today for we might now have women in games today playing the large roles as they have been now. Whoever thought up the idea to make Tomb Raider a movie are the ones that go the extra step, and almost have the Tomb Raider series "sell out" because even though I hadn't seen the movies entirely, they really didn't catch the "feel" the games had. Just my opinion, though. Anyways, hearing that Tomb Raider was under a new company (I think?), I'm not going to entirely drop this title as I was kind of disappointed with past releases. I'm going to give the new company some benefits of the doubt. I think they should expand the gameplay. Since free will has not been becoming something of popular (GTA, Spider-Man 2, etc.), I think it'd be interesting to see the new Tomb Raider have more freedom instead of jumping and climbing through obstacles to get to the other side. It'd give much more fun and there could be more to do in each level rather than just going from point A to point B.
i do agree with you on paving the way for female driven games.. but lets look at the history of female driven games.. umm lets see... hmmm.. its not one to be proud of.. the only game where the main character is a female that is respectable is perfect dark..
I'm interested to see how it turns out, I think it will be better than its predecessor, i mean c'mon it's not that hard to go one better than Angel Of Darkness.
For one, Tomb Raider IS a real 3rd person action adventure. The first one was one of the first games to ever sport largely explorable 3d environments and it took platformer games to the next level. While the games that followed weren't exactly up to par with the original, Tomb Raider not only paved the way for 3D action platformers but also for games with a prominent female lead character who was the one who was kicking all the ass, instead of the one who had to be saved like Keaton said. I found the way you trashed the game to be almost immature, and there's a lot better ways to say why you hate the game so much besides calling it a "joke". As 'not up to par' as the last five gaves have been, I've enjoyed each and every one of them and I especially enjoyed Angel Of Darkness...having not experienced half the bugs that were reported in major gaming magazines (I gave it an 8.5 and I still stand by that today). As did I. But as funny as it is, Toby Gard only was on board for Tomb Raider 1, which despite being limited by today's standards was probably the best of the series. The fact that he's back for this one, and a whole new team is working to make it less "confined" than it used to be, I have good feelings that this game could easily surpass the original. So yeah instead of calling it a "joke" why not wait till a demo leaks? That'd be the wiser idea.
I've never played any of the games after #2, but I gotta ask: Did they fix the camera collision glitch, where if you moved the camera a certain way you could see inside Lara's head?
With advancements in technology, I think that barely any games these days have camera collisions with the hallow structures of the gameplay. Although it's kinda funny to see the camera zoom to a respected point but it goes right through the character's head . On the lines of how Lara paved the way: Lara Croft didn't need her body to get jobs done (no sexual puns intended). Lara Croft was one of the first who proved to the world, especially in gaming that you could be a girl and kick as much ass as a guy. And yes, Tomb Raider is one of the first full 3D platform games that spawned even what we know today as Grand Theft Auto. The elements of climbing, jumping, running, etc. in environments wouldn't have even probably taken the same steps had it not been for Tomb Raider. Honestly, I think Tomb Raider has to be one of the only games to be kicking it for so long. I mean a seventh installation? Who gives if it isn't your cup of tea, it isn't mines, either, but damn, seven installations in the Tomb Raider series and it hasn't died yet, hell it even has a new company behind it. That's impressive enough for me.
dont forget No One Lives Forever, those games are awesome. But as far as girls in lead roles, there hardly any around, so paving the way for something that barely exsists isnt all that great of an acomplishment. Plus you should just leave the butt-kicking to the guys, we were built for it. Not that woman can't, you have to face facts, guys are better for fighting. [commig from real world exsperiance, over 6 years in martal ats, so i know girls can fight, i'm not saying they cant] Plus the tomb raider games just got anoying, the camera is always wacked out, the need to make it more stable and adjust better to the enviroment.

[/b][/quote] Wow... I see you must not game a lot these days nor do you really have a real interst aside from doing a Mortal Kombat fatality or trying to unlock some nude patch for DOA: Beach Volleyball, eh? . You're the type of gamer the girls are proving wrong in this day and age. You really oughta wake up and do some research, females are having much more do to with gaming these days if they be in it or designing it. Who knows, maybe some of your favorite games were produced/created or directed by a female. Wow, really ignorant views there, man... Reeaaally ignorant. I don't think you've had the pleasure to challenge a girl who games, and games good. How can you even say female dominant games aren't a large break through? If it weren't for games like Tomb Raider, great games like Beyond Good & Evil wouldn't have been created. You really oughta' do research, man... The media just makes us think girls can't do what guys do, but there are a few but to say it should be left up to guys is just arrogant. Girls should be able to kick as much ass as we can. If it not be in real life, then give them the ability to virtually.

If they arent, explain how my mom..someone who's never played a video game in her life, can score $330,000 in damages in Burnout 3's crash mode? Heck I cant even get over 270 at times and she goes and gets that on her first try. Like Keaton said you are very ill-informed. Guys are not better for fighting. Have you ever had to deal with a girl who knows jujitsu and can knock you down with a swift kick/punch to the testicles? I didn't think so. You need to get rid of your heavily sexist views on life and realize that girls arent as weak as you make them to be. I'll be the first to bid money that a girl could seriously kick your ass right now and leave you coughing up blood. Girls aren't pansies like you think. Try going up to a well built girl who took self defense lessons and saying you could kick her ass cause men fight better...then write me after you you regain consciousness. Girls aren't weaker, but you are for still thinking men are the better sex.
I agree. I am in martial arts as well and can say without a doubt that they can whoop anyone easily. Not only do they know the weakspots of their fellow woman (which most men, in actuality, do not know of) they also know where to hit the man where it hurts the most. Like Derek said, a kick to the testes... :wth: I really disapprove of the biased view that some gamers have on the female sex. At first all female characters were were placeholders, supporting roles, or eye candy (as I'm sure everyone knows the situation with DOA Beach Volleyball [huh? what? you can play volleyball on that game? ]), but they've expanded into main roles and play an integral part in gaming society today. In online worlds like Final Fantasy XI or Neverwinter Nights or other MMORPGs, extreme respect is given to women. Characters such as Lara Croft, the protagonist from Beyond Good and Evil (which I haven't played, to much regret), to the game Mercenary (I think that's what it's called) have become awesome leading characters and deserve a lot of respect. Girls have this built-in intuition which, while usually used to get you to clean your room or spend several hundred dollars on her prom dress *coughcough* (not objecting though ), can also be used in video games to an alarming degree. Try getting PWNed in Counterstrike, Advance Wars, and Capcom vs. SNK by several women. Not only do they have the mental capacity to beat you down, but the physical know-how as well. I'd advise you drop the biased views sickcycle, they are a stereotype of European society that was dropped (or rather, still needs to be) many years ago. Women are not inferior, and it's people like you that make women believe men are sexist pigs. As for the new Tomb Raider game, wow, can't wait.
It's been almost tradition to unveil the new installments around November. I can guarantee you that within the next five weeks we're going to have a really big bombshell of Tomb Raider related material. Last time when AOD details first came out it made OPM's cover story. I have a strong feeling that with Toby Gard returning, the new development team and the new approach to level design that's going to happen again. I believe OPM's November issue is already out, so therefore we might see something in the December or January issues when they come out. I'm hoping they'll reveal it in their magazine next month (which is oddly their December issue, funny how they go a month ahead).
