The United States has announced plans for a missile defense system which would eventually lead to the weaponization of space (shown in above picture). The defense system is designed to shoot down incoming missiles that may be labeled for North American targets, specifically the USA, by terrorists. Many opponents of the plan say that this will lead to a brand new arms race. Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin announced two weeks ago that Canada would not be involved with the system in any way. Although the US has said that it is not looking for a financial contribution to the program, or approval to base missiles within Canada, the Liberal government still rejected it. What are your thoughts on this system? Does it hold merit that there is a potential missile threat to the US? Or is it mass paranoia?

Personally, I couldn't be more proud to be Canadian at the moment. We didn't go to war with Iraq, and we're not joining this missile defense plan. I think it's just mass paranoia by the United States government. It's absolutely asinine. Starting another arms race is certainly something we don't need.

The start of first world war can be contributed to, other than the Franz Ferdinand assassination and standoff between Serbia and Austria-Hungary where other European countries had to take sides, nationalism and an arms race between the British and Germans. We do not need another arms race. It's already ridiculous that the United States, Russia, and other countries have thousans upon thousands of nuclear warheads they most likely are never going to use. I just think it's so unnecessary and dangerous.

    Your thoughts?

This reminds me of an episode of Angel where they're talking about assassinating a leader of a demon clan with a thermal laser gun that's in outer space or something. Yeah.

Anyways, yeah, sure, do it. I don't really care. I'm probably in the minority here that thinks Bush didn't help with 9/11 at all, and if this will stop future terrorist attacks, so be it. Although it continues to boggle my mind that the US is in debt trillions of dollars, and we're still spending. Oh well.

We've experimented with making smallpox and other deadly viruses for use on the battlefield, so I'm thinking this was the next step. Already made some lethal viruses, now we need to put rocket launches in space!

yeah, i had a teacher talk to me and he said that if you added the government debt, and the debt of all the people in the US, it would be around 300,000,000,000,000 (300 trillion in laymens terms). soo....where th FUCK are we getting money for this? but i do believe this is probably as a precaution for fear that the war may be brought to the US and fought in our home land.

This is the most rediculous thing the U.S. government could do. I can just see how this idea came about. Mr. Dubya was watching Alien Vs. Predator and one thing lead to another.

lol. but a concern of mine is...if we are doing this. wont it lead to the rest of the world being like " well the U.S. did it, so we should do it too incase they try and use it against us" what good is ths going to do? i mean come on, just what we need, another weapons system to argue about with other countries.

Dubya must have watched Austin Powers one too many times and think Dr. Evil has a laser on the moon or something.

I already covered that when I said "arms race".

Leslie: I wrote that from previous knowledge of the plan off the top of my head.

yep.. it was called the Star Wars project. and they called it off becouse it costs too much. and it would take a long time to program all the satelites.. so i don't know why they do this again now... this didn't work before... so why should it work now?
