Ok, so we have this HUGE wave of "boy-bands with guitars", that every one calls Punk. The leader of the pack right now I would say is New Found Glory; now they have the worst vocalist I have heard in quite sometime; sounds like a girl squirl. Which is sad, while listening to the lyrics, they are actually pretty dang good, and so is some of the music, just cant stand their lead singer. Another bad thing is, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Simple Plan, Story of the Year [saw them live with LP, they arnt good at all live!] and all the others sound just like them, they are by definition, a punk genre, but i see hardly any distinction. Whats worse is, it seems like everyone one loves them! I dont know why, maybe teens like this "death pop" music, its a new fad, and i hope it fades, just like the equally awfull boy band days. I dont want to make any one mad, I simply want to discuss why, if you do, you like the new punk music, what is it about it that has you begging for more? I dont intend to flame, I tried to be nice, because I know alot of people would ask me the same question, "WHy do you like your trash music?" i would give them a responce, I simply want you to do the same.
I'm somewhere between the second and third choice. The occasional catchy punk song here and there is fine by me. To the people that say punk sounds all the same, I wonder how they found that out since they claim to hate the genre. If you really hated punk, why would you even check out all the songs by punk bands? So the only answer I can think of is that they have nothing better to do than look down and bash on punk fans.
I don't like that much punk, what I do listen to is mostly Refused and The Misfits, occasionally though.
I like real punk. Or I like Pop punk that people classify Matchbook Romance and Sugarcult in or something. I'm not into Good Charlotte and Avril and NFG. I chose the second option.
There's many different kinds of "punk". I like the harder stuff with screaming. Alexisonfire, Story of the Year, Thrice, Thursday, they're all great. But that's more like screamo-punk. That's not the pop-punk you're talking about. I loathe Good Charlotte.
Some pop-punk is brilliant, such as Alkaline Trio and Green Day (Still, I would pick Refused and Minor Threat over them any day). But once the latter released Dookie, a lot of people saw the genre as a way to make a quick buck. I'm not calling the most recent ones manufactured or sell-outs, but it does seem that way in most cases. I can see this thread ending in tears.
Well i listen to kind of older punk stuff like The Clash, Nofx, Lagwagon, Goldfinger. I do listen to some, as you would call it, 'pop punk' stuff like GC, Simple Plan, Blink 182 etc and i love SOTY. They are definitely not pop punk though mate. All in all, i do like Punk music ALOT but it's not my fave genre.
wow, most of those bands you mentioned arent real punk. the closest they are they are to it is pop punk. GC, blink 182, simple plan, i dont even know what SOTY is doing there. real punk is like bad religion, the distillers (before coral fang), nofx, misfits, some of rancid, blah blah blah. i voted for the first one because i really like punk even though im not fond of GC and i dont act like a teenie. you just gave me no choice and it kind of annoys me that you made a thread without knowing the difference between punk and pop punk because they are 2 totally different things..but whatever nevermind i dont care.
Sickcycle, you seem to have a very big grudge against "new punk". If you haven't already heard them I suggest you listen to the following bands, who have been active in the last ten years. Fugazi Refused Green Day Rocket From The Crypt The Bronx The Alkaline Trio Manic Street Preachers Rancid The Descendents NOFX Crass My appologies if you have already. I don't want to cause any unnecessary offense.
Indeed. Well a lot of people on here know already that I like punk music. I like the older stuff of punk like Rancid, NOFX, Green Day, Sex Pistols, Social D, etc. No band can really equal those bands and what their music has achieved. Pop-punk is indeed the trend these days. I do listen to it and I like it and I don't have a problem with it. Like Jila, I voted for the first one eventhough I do not appreciate that you put the "GC is sexy" part in it. I listen to Good Charlotte but I'm not a damn teenie and it definitely did show that you didn't know the difference between punk and pop-punk, like Jila said.
I'm not keen on some of the bands mentioned by sickcycle, such as Good Charlotte and Simple Plan, but I can bear listening to them once in a while. I guess the fact that their songs tend to be overplayed turns people off from them. I respect GC because I was a fan of theirs and that helped turn me on to bands considered "real punk" and even whole genres, thanks to the namechecks and the bands in their liner notes. Did you ever think about it that way? Todays teenie could be tomorrows metalhead. Or something. :wth:
Greenday is an awesome band, I was not refereing to them. This thread is about pop-punk, not older and much better punk like you guys mentioned. Hence the number one option sounds like a teenie, becuase if you like this pop-punk alot, chances are you are a teenie. Sorry if you all thought I ment to even include the likes of Greenday, rwad my post a little better, its the new punk revolution.
Not true. Not everyone who listens to it is considered a teenie. I would love to know why you think that.
Hey, this is a little off-topic, but if you don't consider Coral Fang to be a punk album, what would you call it? Just wondering.
Not true. Not everyone who listens to it is considered a teenie. I would love to know why you think that. [/b][/quote] I never said that, I said "chances are your a teenie"... which is true, watch TRl and hang around people who like these bands, I do, and when it comes to those bands they act like a teenie. I only speek from exsperiance, I dont make stuff up; I dont intend to offend you...my apologies

If Bad Religion, Social D, Green Day, Pennywise are considered punk, then yeah I can definately stand some punk.
