So I've really put a lot of thought into this. I think my generations music sucks. Between manufactured and recycled pop, rap that focuses on excess and being a fake gang banger, and pig squealing (nuff said) Its all suckish to me. Artists don't even write there own lyrics. They recycle beats and music. Where's the creativity gone? There's no more innovation. It's all bland and all the same. And they spread horrible messages to the kids who listen to the music. I mean for gods sake, Kesha is on the get sleazy tour. All these songs are about drinking, sex, and extreme excess. I feel like music is such an influential thing that this music is taking kids' attention away from reality. They don't have anyone telling them that the government is pocketing millions of our tax dollars. Or that there are countries facing genocide. The music is setting a standard of complacency. Idk maybe I'm just a jaded party pooper. what do you guys think?

I think you just summed up the music that's popular. If you dig deeper there will probably be music that you find enjoyable. You just have to be patient and look for it.

And I have found music that I find enjoyable, but its not such much about me. Its more about how popular music is affecting my generation. Its setting a poor standard, know what I mean?

Oh, well in your original post you made it sound like you couldn't find good music because it was all crap . If you're just trying to say that most of pop/hip hop music is crap then I'm with ya.

I find rap to be the most frustrating for me. It's really hard to find a rapper who doesn't say dick/sex/drugs all the time in an album (OHAI The Rising Tied aka one of the exceptions).

lol I'm with ya, I love like the old school, underground hip hop. I wish that would go more mainstream (it wouldn't be "underground" hip hop anymore, but I can deal with that lmao)

I really don't think so. It's actually been around for quite some time. It'll probably run its course soon if you ask me.

I also gotta imagine Hip-Hope/Rap will die out some day. It's weird to think about but there's only so many fresh ideas that can be made in a genre that involves talking behind a beat.

I think that one day Rock will become extreamly popular again and will overtake all of the Pop/ Hip-Hop crap.

    Hopefully.

Most mainstream music was always generic for their time. We think music today is bad because the older artists we remember were usually the best and the standouts during their time period (Michael Jackson, the beatles = huge examples). There were one hit wonders back then too, you know.

However I do agree that the quality in today's mainstream music has decreased a lot. But most mainstream music back then wasn't that great either.

That's like saying songs with singing will die because there's only so much you can do with singing over other instruments.
imho, Rap has not used it's potential. It's stuck in a rut with people rappin about bitches and hos and endless collaborations used only to gain status and fame. The mainstream sort has lyrics that are getting crappier and crappier, and the production is so simplistic. Basically, the genre has nowhere to go but up.

Lol you have nooo idea. Hip-hop doesn't even necessarily have to have rapping over it, and even when it does - the reason the genre is STILL evolving even though it's almost been around for (almost?) three decades is because it has zero limits in timbre.

I think it's safe to say Pop Rock music is starting to die out from the mainstream.

We used to have bands like Sum 41, Simple Plan and MCR dominating the charts, and now those kinds of groups are barely charting the top 40.
